doctors return plans to india

Post by swajayr »

I think all though most of the discussions in this site are helpful for any one planning to return to india , for doctors there are lots of different issues involved.
Prime difference would be totally different working conditions and atmosphere, whether estabishing your own unit or working in a corporate setup .Ofcourse the difference in income is huge which plays a major role in your descision to move, may be retirement on return is more appropriate for us.
But on the other hand health care industry is booming in india and there may be huge potential in the future and no replacement for the satisfaction of offering professional service to your own people which might include charity work.I am my self recently finished my residency and very keen to move back home.

please share the thoughts and opinion for a move back home.

swajayr,

My wife is a Family Practice physician. We are planning to R2I by the end of the year. She has been practising for the past 4 years.

The points you made about the working conditions as well as the difference in income are concerns for her as well.

But, it seems like the environment here for docs are getting worse every day. Malpractice Insurance takes away a good chunk of the income. There is always the fear of some stupid law suit. Also, most of the big cities have reached saturation for primary care docs. One has to move to remote areas in the country if one is looking for a thriving practice. On the other hand, like you said, Indian health care industry is poised for growth. Medical Tourism etc will start to become a bigger factor as well.

Either way, it is a tough decision.

Btw, you might want to check out a website that I created. It is a social network for doctors. Currently, has a lot of content about USMLE and residencies. I am hoping to add more info for residents/practising physicians soon. http://www.socialmd.com.

I have met very few doctors who have gone back including my Dad and I think the motivation for doctors to go back should not be booming health care industry or money. If you go back with that idea you will be frustrated in few years and would think of coming back here. There is absolutely no comparison between the financial gain that the physician gets here as compared to India. There are just few who are very successful and make lots of money. There are lots of factors that play role in that success - Luck, skills and some times being a crook. Just Skills alone or being trained in US is no good. But most of the people who relocated back , went back for family, kids and satisfaction of treating your own people who are loving and treat you well. My Dad is not a millionaire, which he would have been if he might have decided to stay here( he is a surgical oncologist). All his friends over here are multi millionaires. He still travels in train. He still has to plan his trip to come and see me, which he has hardly done 2 times. While growing up I never saw money flowing in our house and I never saw my dad either, as he was busy taking care of his patients. But now after 25 years when I talk to him he says he have no regrets. He is pretty famous in our 2-tier city. He has a very social life style. He says why do I need all that money when I have raised two kids who can take care of themselves. In the end when he comes home even now after work he has army of people waiting to see him.He loves it. And now many of his friend who were here have started doing the same 6 months deal. They stay 6 months here and 6 months in India. Their kids are here in US and my Dads kids are also here in US.But there is a chance that we might go back.I think both my dad and his friend are happy. The question is what type of happiness you want, financial security or social life, name and fame.
As a doctor in India you will never be out of work , but might never be a millionaire either. You will have enough money to have a good middle class life style.
SOme how I married a guy who is just like my dad. SO here I am on this forum planning to go back.

- Just moved by your above statements. No words to describe your father's gratitude towards India. It clearly shows that one should have your father's attitude, character, temperament and willingness to serve others which yields more love, affection, warmth and friendliness. I would also add if one gives more importance to the above factor - money automatically comes and we don't need to search for money. My friend Prof. Dr. Chandramohan (Chief - Stanley Medical College/Hospital - Chennai) who I regard as one of the world's best Gastroenterologist surgeon use to say : "If we are good and do our duty with utmost sincerity, honesty and skilfully - We don't need to search for Fame or Money - Instead Fame & Money will automatically come to us "

I am happy that you got a wonderful husband just like your father.

Times are changing...and one never knows what future holds for any of us...

I can only wish you guys Good Luck and hope for the best....words fail me when I try to describe people like your father. Please let him know of people like me and LoveIndia, outside his social circle who'd like to take our hats off and bow in salutations to noble beings like him. He is a true hero and you are blessed to have him as a role-model.

Three cheers to the lady, her husband and her father...Hip Hip Hooray!!!

Well I don?t deserve that, my father does. Having brought up by an idealistic father had made me more practical and believe me I am still in a big dilemma regarding going back.
FOr those doctors who want to R2I , I can just say one think, dont go back for money or job security. If you are planning to go back you should have other stronger reasons to go back.

Just like to add.. job security will be there for the docs who plan to R2I. There are always people like me who never visit a doc here in the US. Fly to India every 1-2 years and get everything checked up - eyes, teeth, cholestrol.. and get the required medications for the next 2 years. Totally support medical offshoring. :emsmiled:

I am a doctor and I'm returning to India in about 3months or so.

I have been a "behind the scenes lurker" in this forum, getting a lot of good tips and ideas about planning my return. The focus of this group is on IT and so it is refreshing to see other doctors also in the same process as I am.

I am clearly in the minority. Most doctors stay back because of the fantastic financial incentives this country offers. Very few stay for the love of medicine or love of their job. I know, because I've been there, done that. But the more i do this, the more I realize that there is only so much money I can earn, cause it never fills my life. And I don't want to wake up one morning and find out that the only thing I've done in my life is turned fifty.

I have a fairly good experience with job hunting in India. I took me about 4 months and I finally have an offer to join a hospital of my choice as a consultant with a nice compensation. It is no where near my earning potential in this country, but then I've arranged my priorities.

I truly believe that these are exciting times in India and there is increasing "corporatization" of health care in India. Brand name hospitals are setting up shop and in 10-20yrs the healthcare scenario is scheduled to undergo a dramatic change. Some changes are good, some bad... but all are part of these 'growing pains'. What excites me is being part of the process... and be able to incorporate some of the great things I've learned in the US into the work ethic of Indian hospitals. As a chinese philosopher once said "May you live in interesting times...."

British doctors looking for jobs in Indian hospitals

LONDON: Facing stiff competition for limited jobs at home, a number of young British doctors are exploring employment prospects in India and other countries.
Hundreds of junior doctors have applied for jobs in India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US, Hospital Doctor, an industry publication, said in its latest issue.
There has been an acute shortage of jobs for doctors in the UK of late. The National Health Service had recently advertised for 22,000 junior doctors posts for which it received over 30,000 applications.
Even if 22,000 vacancies are filled, still there will be about 8,000 unemployed doctors.
Hospital Doctor has reported that many Indian private hospitals have been advertising for British doctors as India is currently experiencing a boom in medical tourism.
It quoted a Coimbatore hospital as saying in its advertisement that 'Salary will not be a constraint for the right candidate.'
Thousands of British doctors face the prospect of immigrating to various countries due to uncertainties caused by procedural flaws in the recruitment system called Modernising Medical Careers (MMC), an online application system.
Following criticism from junior doctors and experts in the field, the British government has ordered a review of the system.
A senior NRI doctor said that Indian doctors aspiring to pursue post-graduate studies and a future in the UK should think twice before embarking on their venture as job prospects in Britain is dwindling fast.
