vmjoshi: My R2I (Pune) diary / experience

Post by vmjoshi »

All,
I am from Pune and spent 25 years of my life there.
I am moving anytime now while my family is already moved and they are in Pune. School has started for my daughter and
everything seems to be normal. I had to stay back to sell my house. Now I am planning to move end of this month and
sending my stuff in 20' container. Here are the things which I experienced:
1) Movers: I am moving with a company from India and they seem to be very reasonable. I tried contacting lot
of companies mentioned on this site but most of them were expensive. From Cincinnati to Pune (Door to Door) , average
quote I got was $5000 and above.
With this moving and forwarding company in Mumbai, they quoted me $3000 (Door to Door). They are in commercial business
for long time and not much into Household moving. But I got their ref. from friend of mine who uses then for his Business
and very reliable. So once I am done and moved, I'll share my experience again. As of now, they look very good !!
2) I read number of posts about what stuff to take etc etc. I am taking following things in 20' container:

--> Queen Size mattress set with Frame
--> Octagonal Table woth 4 chairs ( Breakfast size)
--> My Motorcycle ( GSXR750)
--> Leather Sofa set
--> Regular sofa set
--> Around 50 Boxes ( Large/Medium/Small size)
--> Washer/Dryer Apartment style stackable ( Which works on 220V)
--> Air Conditioner 21000BTU works on 220V
--> 32" LCD TV ASTAR 32HBG which works on both voltages and NTSC/PAL
--> 40" LCD TV ASTAR which works on both voltages and NTSC/PAL
--> 26" Mens and 24" girls bicycle
--> Center and side table

I will update this post as I get more information.
If you need any information about Pune, let me know.

Congratulations!! I believe this is major transition for most r2i's. I can imagine the busiest time of yours. Sure one got to be anxious too. Thanks for sharing the info. Please share your experience with movers. I will be looking forward to. Goodluck !

I will be R2Iing next year and would like to take a sports motorcycle with me. My current ride (2003 YZF R6) wont pass the grade for import into India.

Could you please post your experience with your bike after you get it into India? Things such as
- Customs & Homologation
- Fuel in India
- Roads: How your super-sport handles the Lunar surface
- Plan for maintenance (oil, oil filter etc)
- Protective gear (other than helmet)

If things dont workout, I will probably settle for my old favorite, the Enfield :)

I have seen bunch of R6's in Bangalore. That was my ride in CA too but I didn't bring it. There are many gxrs too.

In general my thinking is that:
Bring a cruiser or a sit-up-straight bike instead of a sports bike - say Honda Shadow or equivalent or the BMW 650 or better. Hope you don't bring the loud ones. :emsmile:
They'll handle the roads better and driving outside the city will be fun in a cruiser.
Fuel here isn't that bad. Bangalore has a few Shell stations where I have found fuel to be absolutely fine. I see a significant difference in mileage.
Know which parts wear out faster and get those spares. Learn to service your own bike.

No idea on the remaining stuff.

Try searching or asking in this forum - although it is a car forum, I think bikes are discussed once in a while.

Thanks, back_in_des. I did see some super sports on my last visit to Bangalore (such as the Hayabusa). The riders appeared to be too young for R2I types :). I figured they either:

1. Imported it, new. OR
2. Bought it near the Rajneesh ashram in Pune or from some variation of this source of used bikes.

Thanks again, for your response.
