A third of the world now faces deadly heatwaves as result of climate change
Study shows risks have climbedsteadily since 1980, and the number of people in danger will grow to 48% by2100 even if emissions are drastically reduced.
“For heatwaves, our options are now between bad or terrible,”said Camilo Mora, an academic at the University of Hawaii and lead author ofthe study.
“The heat means that we are becoming prisoners in our own homes– you go to Houston, Texas in the summer and there’s no-one outside,” says one author.
“Also, the increased use of air conditioning means thatelectrical grids fail, as has happened in New York City, Australia and SaudiArabia. We need to prevent heatwaves rather than just trying to adapt to them.”

[h=1]How hot is it in the West? Let us count the ways[/h]SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) - It's so hot in the West that the scorching heat is breaking records, causing massive power outages and prompting flight cancellations.
The peak may be coming Tuesday as Phoenix is expected to hit a high of 119 degrees Fahrenheit and Death Valley, California, could be all too fitting for its name, as the National Weather Service forecasts a high of 127 degrees.
Las Vegas could also see peaks on Tuesday and Wednesday. The city could gamble with its highest temperature ever observed, which was 117 degrees Fahrenheit in 2013.
Excessive heat warnings have been issued for inland California, southern Nevada and parts of southwest Arizona until Friday. More than 29 million residents in California are under a heat warning or advisory.
Here'show the sweltering heat wave is affecting the West:

The dangerous heat that has built across Spain will expand northeastward into France this week.

Las Vegas hits 117 degrees, tying a record, as the Southwest bakes
For much of the afternoon, outdoor dining areas and patios along the Las Vegas Strip were empty as the hot sun pounded the streets and sidewalk relentlessly.
Las Vegas hit 117 degrees late Tuesday afternoon, tying a record that has happened only three other times in the city’s history, the first in 1937 and the most recent four years ago.
It was a relative cool spot compared with Yuma in neighboring Arizona, however, where the mercury hit 120 degrees. Blythe, Calif., on the border with Arizona, reached 121 degrees.
