I add few spoons of yogurt and salt/roasted jeera powder in water and then add vadas..keep them there for about 1 min..press and get water out before adding proper yogurt and other chutneys.

for a 3 yr old I'd not worry too much ..still even at this age the diff is huge and your child would need a transition to handle indian kids.
