Giving up US citizenship to gain Indian citizenship - Process

Can anyone help with the process related questions in gaining back IN citizenship and renouncing US citizenship?
Note that IN asks that you submit the 'certificate of renunciation from the foreign country' between "IN's acceptance of application for IN citizenship" and issue of the IN citizenship certificate. That points to a problem - one could be stateless for a brief period. Or worse, if IN decides to reject your application for some reason, you'd be in deep trouble. I suppose the IN's acceptance is not given lightly and it is probably an assurance of the IN citizenship but technically, there could still be a problem. http://www.renunciationguide.com says that some US consulates ask for the other country's passport to avoid this issue. But that seems like a deadlock situation. I'm sure, in reality things must be better. So, is there anyone who can advise based on their experiences?
