Linksys router which is connected to the Cable modem is no longer able to connect to internet.
What could be wrong ? all the lights are up and laptop is able to connect wirelessly to the router.
And when i connect to cable modem , i am able to hit the internet...so cable modem is working fine...
I went to Router setup and reset ...still it is not getting an IP address...i switched the cables around..still no luck..

You may check a little bit by yourself, this way.
You need to check your router settings,
that accidentally you have not selected them, only for the wireless !!
if you can still surf the web with your laptop, by use of that router, Go to www. routerlogin.com
You need to know your router's login name and password,
If you don't know any, try with name as admin and password ( just bypass, by hitting enter ) . It may work.
In the left hand column, click on "Router status" and verify the data that it makes sense.
In the left hand column, click on "attached devices" and verify the data ( mac number of each device connected in router and no. of items connected in router,.. for example, in my case I run voip phones - ooma and nettalk through the router, so mac number of those devices should match there showing in the box, with total three items shown - ooma + nettalk + my desktop PC ) that it makes sense.
Also check in left hand column on the top, with " basic settings " and " wireless settings " and find out, everything makes sense.
More importantly, in left hand column, click under the advanced tab,
"wireless settings"and make sure that the tic mark is there, whereever it should have.
Best thing is to call below number of Linksys and tech guys will walk with you,
as I explained above.
or,.. you may also call your local cable company's toll free number and they may also walk with you for above settings, whatever it should be.
If you use and prefer also the wireless use for your laptop,
DO ask from them for a set up with a strict password and ultra security, so that no neighbors can steal your signals for free.
For Example,...... If on your router, you have connected only 2 devices,
say your laptop and desktop PC
and still it shows all numbers 1 , 2, 3, 4 ( all four output lines on router) lighted ON,
that means someone is stealing your signals
and your computers are surfing slower, Coz' it feeds the signals wirelessly to the neighbors too !!

Sometimes the sockets takes about 9 mins to reset. Is yours WRT54G?
Pls check your wires are connected properly esp after you switched cables.
Do a complete restart:
Switch off everything for 15 mins.
Power on the cable modem.
Once all lights on cable modem comes on, start the router.
If still the wireless does not connect, connect to the router thru a cable and confirm if its fine.
Assuming its fine, try changing the SSID name, remove any security, remove the old wireless connection on PC and then try to connect.
Based upon your status we can narrow down the root cause.

Thanks guys. I tried switching off ( though i did not wait full 15 minutes..I powered my router immediately after my modem lights came on ) and logging to the admin console.
the last thing i tried was to mimic my MAC address of PC..an option in WRT54G ..Once i did that , router was able to get address from Modem and i could connect to internet through router.

Very common for ISPs to do this in India....tie an allocated IP to a MAC address. A more permanent solution would be to remove the mimic of the MAC, call the ISP and ask them to clear the DHCP binding. This way you will not have to worry if you change machines so long as the router remains the same.

Configuring wireless routers is very frustrating. I faced this problem too, tried for 2 days, called a network person to correct and he did it in half an hour. There is tons of information on internet about how routers are not working even when all the pre-steps are carried out properly. I believe the problem is "all the lights are up". They shouldn't be. Only the ethernet, internet and the PC connection light should be on. Faced a similar issue this last weekend, earlier i had the ethernet cable (cable 1) from my provider's modem connected to my wireless router and then one more cable (cable 2) from my wireless to my vonage device, this week i tried to connect cable 1 to my vonage device and cable 2 from vonage device to wireless router and i couldn;t connect to the internet using wire/wireless modes. then i had to press the reset button on my providers modem and after that both the modes are working fine.
