Hi All,
I am looking to return to India in 4 months. I am an IT infrastructure Manager (servers, dba and desktop) at a medium sized company. I have a Master's from US + 12 years experience + PMP. The past 4 years I have been in Infrastructure mid level management. My technical background is from DBA and of late from SAP basis Admin.
Question:
1. What kind of profile can I expect in India?
2. I have heard there are not that many management level IT Infrastrature jobs in India - Is that correct?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can look at managing the indian IT shop of a US MNC. They usually have good budget for network ops, server ops, DBA and desktop support. Your main job would be to see that ops are smooth and that there are no outages. You would have to ensure good service.
Other option is to join wipro etc where you can bid for and later manage projects to manage infrastructure.
I would prefer the first option.

Most of the services companies have ITO divisions (Information Technology Outsourcing) which provide data center management, shared services and infrastructure management etc. You should specifically target these companies. e.g. includes IBM global, EDS and TCS.

Thanks Folks for your reply. What kind of pay scales are people getting with this profile? Does the same rule as in development or project management apply? Any experiences of people in this role please post your comments.

IT Infrastructure jobs are plenty. Many fortune 100 companies have some kind of Infrastructure support based out of India. In addition, you have companies like Accenture, IBM global services who manage remotely for other clients. And you have the desi IT giants like TCS/Wipro/INFY and others.
But you'll find it a challenge to be slotted right. Typically they will look for a particular speciality. You are expected to be technically strong in one field like DBA or Unix Admin or Network Admin. With SAP basis background, there should be many opportunities.
You are expected to provide hands on technical leadership since most guys would be young and immature.
Exposure to ITIL will be helpful.Sometimes it may require working odd hours.
Salaries will depend on whether it's a cost center or a revenue center. The range was 12-18 Lacs in 2005 in Bangalore. (The huge variance is dependent on role, size of company and team, willingness to work odd hours.). I had offers at both ends of the range.
With SAP basis background, you can look for the top end of current salary range.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply. Desipardesi, when you say you had offers in India did u end up taking them and / or u back in USA? What about positions like purely management like 'data center manager' or a 'Operations Director role' wher one is responsible for all facets of IT infrastructure?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Most remote infrastructure management jobs in India are in the fortune 100 companies and it seldom covers all facets of IT Infrastructure. Yes, some are director level jobs. But it usually involves managing the team in India. Not for entire IT infrastructure of an organization.
Usually it's the routine day to day operations that's done out of india. One reason is there's only so much you can do remotely. Data center managers are usually based locally in the U.S. It's a control thing and also internal politics. That's something the white man still wants control of...
There are some jobs which might have a local data center component (like TI or cisco in bangalore) supporting a large development team or the IT infrastructure of the Indian office (Yes, someone need to be managing the remote offices connectivity/routers/DS3 links and such...)
It's usually a small slice of a larger pie of the IT Infrastructure jobs.
Other options are in consulting where you will responsible to build a team or several teams for supporting different clients with managers from each team reporting to you and you are overall responsible for SLAs. These may require some travel and frequent client interaction during crisis situation.
In summary, i found that there are many different types of roles which are available in IT infrastructure management at all levels.. No strict definition. You need to explore.. Note that almost every Fortune 50 company has setup a shop in India. So opportunities are plenty....
Also remember it's a numbers game in India. A 10-20 man team is big in the U.S. under a director. But it's no match to team sizes in India where it can easily go above 100.
And no management experience in India is considered a -ve for Infrastruture jobs. :(
Yes, i did work in Bangalore for a couple of years in 2004 building a team which grew to almost 50. (Dont ask me where... ) But i ended up moving back after realizing that my savings are neglible and some health issues. :)

Desipardesi,
Thanks a lot. It is one of the most comprehensive threads I have seen on this specific topic. It does not seem encouraging but again it has nothing to do with your answer but the reality on the ground. Can you please write to us in detail about the success / challenges you faced that are unique to our area of work? If there is a way I can talk to you or email you please let me know and I can do the same.
Thanks,

I am interested in this question by Velliyurn1234. Can somebody throw some light on this pay scales. My profile is almost similar to Velliyurn1234 as well and I am very curious.
Also, is there a large difference in pay betweeen Bangalore and the other IT cities?
