All,
I understand the TN govt is considering expansion of the international airport in chennai or setting up a new aiport in a different place in chennai... Researching this, I understgand the Govt is inclining towards the expansion rather than a new aiport.
Do you have the latest info on this? Any pointers?
thanks, Madhu

Chennai Airport Expansion & Greenfield Airport
I dont have the latest information, but this what I have heard so far.
Expansion: This is running into troubles for a long time, but maybe eventually the govt will win. But the residents and other locals from the Pozhichalur area which is primarily affected due to this expansion have been protesting and every time there is a talk, they get hold of one political party or the other and stage a dharna, road blocks etc.
New airport: Recently there was some news about various location being considered for the new airport including Vandalur Kelambakkam Road, South of OMR etc. I also recently heard that govt is considering the area between Redhills and MTH road. There is a old airstrip also in this area that was built during the British period to land small aircrafts.
All these are news in air, nothing is concerete or released by govt so far.

What's wrong with the current airport? I always felt it was one of the better airports in India. Till late 90s it used to be lousy but since then they have renovated it and made the international airport pretty clean on the inside. Plus they have done everyone a favor by splitting the arrival and departure terminals and thus dividing the crowding outside. I hope they don't think if they build a new airport all of sudden the crowds outside are going to dissapear.

IBD,
The reason could be creating multiple runways/landing strips. Chennai airport has only one runway for landing/takeoff. There is absolutely no room for adding another runway or for increasing the length of the exisitng one for bigger aircraft like A380. The airport is surrounded by residential areas and hills. So, building a bigger airport makes sense, which may benefit south Chennai even more, as the city will expand further to the south.
The Meenambakkam airport may still be there and could serve as a cargo only airport.

IN DISCUSSION: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi presiding over the all-party meeting on airport expansion, at the Secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday.
CHENNAI: Chennai will have a new airport soon. It will also see the expansion of the existing airport to meet the growing needs.
These were the decisions taken at an all-party meet chaired by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. He later said the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam did not agree with the resolution, claiming that many people would be affected by the airport expansion project.
Mr. Karunanidhi said that he had assured the party representative that the Government would look into all petitions. The task of construction would be entrusted with the Airports Authority of India.
Instead of the earlier decision to take over land in thickly populated areas of Ankaputhur, Gowl Bazaar, Pallavaram Cantonment and the nearby areas, the new land acquisition would be in four villages ? Manapakkam, Kolapakkam, Kerukampakkam and Tharapakkam. A total of 1069.99 acres would be acquired for the expansion in the villages.
In the earlier case, the number of people to be displaced was put at 60,000 and houses to be razed down at 5,000. Now, 7,115 persons living in 947 houses would be displaced. A small extent of defence land also needed to be acquired. The compensation package and relocation cost would be around Rs. 1,000 crore.
The Government would also acquire land for the proposed greenfield airport. The development of the airport and the expansion of the old airport would proceed simultaneously. As many as 4,820.66 acres spread across Tirumangalam, Mambakkam, Irungulam, Vadamangalam, Padicherry, Sirukilai, Kilai and Sriperumbudur in Sriperumbudur taluk, Tirupandiyur and Vayalur in Tiruvallur taluk would be acquired. A total of 6,540 people would be affected and 1,078 houses would be razed. The compensation would cost the Government Rs. 1,799.89 crore and resettlement of the affected people, Rs. 53.9 crore.
Officials explained that since the earlier government had already committed that it would give land free of cost for the development of an airport, it was not possible to go back on that now. The new airport would have four runways to cater to the increased traffic. Both airports would be required given the rate at which Chennai was growing, the officials said.

CHENNAI: Two sites near Chennai are under the active consideration of the State Government for the greenfield airport, according to an official source.
Alamadi village, north of Chennai, and Sunguvarchattram near Sriperumbudur are the two sites for the new airport. Alamadi village is about 8 km from Red Hills and 30 km northwest of Chennai. One of the reasons for considering this location for the project is the site?s proximity to the proposed Outer Ring Road. In the case of Sunguvarchattram, it is close to the Chennai?Bangalore highway.
The other important criterion for considering these two sites for evaluation is the presence of large tracts of government land.
According to the source, the Government is keen to avoid acquisition problems. Other places in and around Sriperumbudur are fraught with acquisition issues since most of them are patta lands.
