Car in India, models, safety, insurance, etc : Automobile

I am planning to R2I in May 2007. Looking for your suggestions on a good car to buy. Considerations: Family of four with one six-footer and another 5'11" (need vertical space), moving to Bangalore, have lived in U.S. for a long time and wife is comfortable with only automatic transmission cars, may hire a driver initially but prefer to be on one's own in the long run, smaller car preferred for parking and city traffic reasons. Also, a related question: 1) how easy is it procedurally to buy the car? Do I need a PAN card to buy a car with cash?

Thanks for your ideas and suggestions.

So you need a "small car" , with a six footer in the house. :) .
Ok . Not an expert though but let me try a little.

Petrol versions
small-Swift--
small- Wagon R
small- Santro
Midsized- Honda city
midsized- ford fiesta
midsized- Verna

Diesel
swift,
and
Verna

Since you come from the US . I suggest you go for either a Honda city OR a Verna unless you have more money to throw.
Automatic transmission cars require early repairs in India ( not suitable ).
besides they dont have much resale value.

YOu do not need a PAN card being an NRI.procedures are simple
Pay the money and get the car in a few days.
AND WHAT IS CASH FOR YOU ...HARD CASH? or straight one time payment and no bank financing?
in any case its all too simple if its not financed.

I have been using Honda City CVT (Automatic) for last 2 years and I love it. I thought of hiring a Driver initially but now prefer to drive myself. It is best car to drive in City with heavy traffic and mileage is also good (I get 13-14 kpl) in Hyderabad.

Thanks for the suggestions. By cash, I meant a one time payment but you got the point already. When you say, "Automatic transmission cars require early repairs in India", how early is early? Will a Honda City be better than a Santro in their automatic versions, considering that Santro has had a greater experience designing for India.

OP, I too am interested in auto transmission. I have a manual here in the US, and frankly I see it as a major pain esp. in Indian traffic to be shifting every 10 secs. Besides the gear being to your left will take some adjusting too (using the weaker hand). Even if there is freq repairs, the pain of everyday gear shifting is less than the pain of a once a year transmission repair. To me it is a no-brainer. besides spouse can drive easily.

Regarding the comment of auto transmission breaking down easily - on what basis is this observation being made? Is it anecdotal? Does it apply across all models? Is it something to do with the roads? auto transmission is more efficient than manual. the shifting is based on rpm and not human sense.

I used to have santro manual. i loved it. but sold it to buy a santro automatic. my friend has had the santro-auto for quite some time, 2-3 years, with no issues at all. good mileage as well. most important thing is my wife can drive very comfortably.

i'd recommend it for pain-less driving. or the honda-city CVT if you don't plan to come to the city often and stay in the suburbs. I love CVT too.

so, jijo, you need to let go that prejudice against automatic. :)
