Helping start up India office

Post by dvfinance »

Guys
I need some input from you people. My company has a small office in India which i helped to start and was primarily responsible for it. Now my company is requested that i go to India for extended period (not for good as of now) and manage and grow this.
What i would like to know is what kind of negotiation OR compensation OR goodies should i ask. The company is willing to pay me USD salary. However my feeling is that since this is a bigger responsibility, i deserve and should ask for more.
Problem is .. what should i ask and what is realistic to ask FYI Mine is a small company and our revenue for the year is around $10Million.

I know a lot of people might have done this. so looking for some suggestions

If you are going for less than an year, just ask them continue current salary & benefits. In addition, ask for all expenses in India to be reimbursed for you and your family.

Most people will do that.

Lets forget for a sec that this is in India. Lets assume that our office is in Chicago and i am helping them set up an office in New York since my contacts and network in that city is huge. Also this office is adding to our growth. Would you still suggest that i ask for just the current salary and benefits. What i dont want to do is underestimate my offerings rather over estimate them and get due credit for the work i am going to be doing.
If this was an american doing this, i would assume he would ask for a small equity etc in the new office.
OR I might totally be wrong .... looking for suggestions and comments

Congratulations! on getting this opportunity. If it’s possible please keep us updated on your experiences.

Provided you have this job pretty much in the bag.

My suggestion:

1. Negotiate a Bonus and a salary hike before leaving (even if these apply at the end of the yearly payroll cycle). This is similar to what you would do in USA

2. Keep your USA salary out of this India assignment (The salary is getting deposited in your Savings account)

3. Negotiate a Expat allowance (google for Expat allowance) to cover your expenses in India. (Calculate how much it would cost you and family to live in India for this - rent - car - food ...). You will need to do some research for this. Break down the cost in per month. Multiply that figure by (1 + .0x) where the x depends on your body of knowledge regarding your company's finances.

IMHO this sounds like a great opportunity and may lead to better things for you, so be mindful of this added incentive.

[ I know someone who even negotiated mortgage payment for his house, his argument was that he wanted to maintain a residence in USA, no idea about other perks though. This might be urban legend as MBA type BS a lot]

Thanks for your response. This extended period that i would have to go for now is at the max 1 year .. just so that you know. The company is willing to pay me USD salary. However i am not sure whether they would cover my expenses in addition in India too. According to me, i think they should cover my expenses in India whatever they are in addition to the salary they pay. I plan to keep my apartment in US, so i am ready to pay that rent. The Bonus part is what i am the most after and ideally i would like it to be a part of this new office's profit. That way i am linked to the profit for the long term. But i work for a stingy and moody management and you never know how it would go. They might even say that we will pay you 80%of your US salary since the living cost is cheap in India OR it doesnt make sense for you to just go for 6-8 months.
The main goal of this extended stay is to grow this team and it is becoming increasingly difficult to hire good talent sitting in the US for an Indian office.

what did you mean by Multiply that figure by (1 + .0x) . if the figure is Rs 50000/-, how much should i ask as per this calculation?
