UPS / Inverter / back power generator related

Most R2Iers from Bangalore must have bought a UPS.

I would be thankful if you furnish specifics of
a) what brand and configuration for which appliances
b) What price for battery and inverter
c) who was the dealer.
d) how many batteries

I heard some astronomic prices from dealers and wanted to ensure I was not overpaying

I tried using local made UPS at first and regretted it. It would break down frequently and the guy who made it would not show up to fix it etc.
Then I bought a APC UPS thru a dealer in July 2006 and it has worked well. The service center person checks on it once every 3 months for 2 years and there is an extended warranty. There are a number of dealers around and you can find them by calling APC itself (from the telephone directory).

Apologies, I didn't mean an UPS for my computer. I was looking for the entire house with TVs and other stuff. I have been told that a geyser and fridge cannot be handled because of high voltage requirements.

1KV is the bare minimum but have often been advised to have atleast 2KV. The prices that have been quoted have ranged from 22K to 50K (for 3kv) including batteries. (with sine)

APS have provided me a quote of 22K for 1KV including batteries. They think that is sufficient for 2 TVs and rest of the lights and fans.

There is a company called Digitech in Kerala who build them by order and are pretty cheap. But guess someone will have to transport them.

Hello R2Iers,

I would be working from home most of the time, and so think that it is a good idea to have a personal power backup/generation system. I was told by my prospective land lord that it is possible to buy one in India for about 100 USD and we can run laptops, etc. on it.

Does anybody here have experience in buying and using such a power backup / generation system? If yes, can you please share details such as manufacturer of the system, cost involved, maintenance headaches, etc.?

Thank you,
R2I4C.

You really need two seperate types of devices:

1. generator/battery invertor for powering electrical devices in your home.

2. A UPS (uninterrupted power supply) device for PCs. You need this so that your PCs can seamlessly switch over to this power source in the event of an outage.

For generators you can probably find Honda among the well known brands.

For inverters i haven't seen any well known international brands in India making and selling those - but even if you go with a regional brand, it should be okay. You can find them through advertisements in newspapers.

For UPS, APC is a well known international brand.
