Take the bus tour - in spring/summer you can ride on the open top and hop-on hop-off at your places of interest. We did that once and part of the bus tour took care of kids' nap time!
If you are the walking kind - you can walk all the way from Buckingham palace to London Eye and all places in between.

All places mentioned above are nice -
Westminster Abby might not be especially interesting to kids, but there is so much history crammed into every square inch there - that was the highlight of our visit to London.

If i am not mistaken there is also a scheme where u pay for ur travel card for the day and see as many places as u want with jump the queue and it can be bought for a day or 6days, but make sure you are familiar with the underground map and the buses. If you master that, this travel card offer works out really sensible. Also, dont forget the congestion charge is £8/day and it has been extended, so don't even think of a car, although with this charge cming into effect parking has become easier in central london, but be prepared to pay 2-10pounds /hour depending on where you park.Oh,here is the website btw...good luck and enjoy

Spent most of the day at Whipsnade Wild Animal Park. Both my kids enjoyed thoroughly. I would strongly recommend the place.
