Hyderabad as r2i city for non-locals

Post by r2ihello »

Hi folks,

Are there any 'returned to Hyderabad' non-local folks here who can provide their impressions of this city? ease of living, language, education, jobs, whatever. Are you happy with your choice etc? If you want, you can send me a private email too for candid opinions.

I am from a small city on the west coast. Interest in Hyderabad was because
a) RE not as pricey as Bangalore and not as congested as Bangalore
b) decent schools
c) decent IT jobs. Though most job queries have stated Bangalore :emcry:

I am telugu but non-local :emwink:
Most jobs quote Bangalore because they think its easier to attract people there. Which is true. Bangalore is the preferred place for foreign workers due to several reasons (esp. weather). Hyderabadi is more tolerant to multi-culture(due to old history) so you will be a "local" sooner than you think.

What puzzles me on this forum, Hyd has 575 posts while Blr has 150 posts now.

why blr RE has fewer posts than hyd RE. perhaps bcos blr RE is not affordable any more.

I'm from blr and at blr, but I invested in chennai - bcos there was nothing in blr that I could afford.

Recently I was talking to my friend who lives in Singapore working for MNC bank. He said almost every Indian living there spend most of the time talking and investing in RE in India. Most of them are MBA/CA making big bucks. India is just 3-4 hrs by flight and they visit multiple times to make bookings and sign the papers. He said same is happening in NRI circle in the Gulf who have lot of tax free money. He himself has bought a house for 1 CR and planning to rent it out. In this situation I doubt if the prices will crash. These folks plan to keep the house locked or rent it out if there is a slump.

I'm a non-local and do not speak telugu. I R2I'ed 4 months ago and here is my experience with Hyderabad so far.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying all this is true, but its just been my experience so far -- so passionate hyderabadis please don't send me hate mail about any of this.

Pros:
1) Weather is good except 2 months of extreme heat.
2) Nice roads
3) Relatively low rents even in nice gated communities.

Cons:
1) Just one main con with many manifestations: Hyderabad is not really a cosmopolitan city, as it pretends to be.

A lot of people, especially plumbers, electricians, auto-rickshaw drivers etc. speak only Telugu, and it is very difficult for Hindi speakers to communicate with them.

Traffic discipline is also not even comparable to other big cities in India. Driving is a nightmare since people have great roads but still drive like they're driving in a village.

If you've heard of IST (Indian Stretchable Time), Hyderabadis take it to the next level. Multiply all time-estimates by 6. "I'll be there in 5 minutes" == "I'll be there in 30 minutes".

All FM radio channels are playing Telugu music almost all the time, and movie theatres (except in multiplexes) play Telugu movies.

The cons you listed are not for HYD Locals who had lived there. SO they are not really considered as cons. Tell us about something which you would hate even when you were local to HYD ( say 10 years back )

I am from Hyderabad and living in US for last 10 years. Planning to R2I in 2009. Will be helpful if you can list cons and pros with Hyderabadi mindset...

I agree with one of the respondents, Traffic discipline is really bad!!!!!!!!! much worse than what one can expect being an Indian. I am having a tough time dealing with my road rage even tho my commute from work to home is hardly 15 mins. The Cops try every few months to enforce strict discipline at the traffic signals, but as soon as they leave, its back to the same.

I think the problem is not coz of Hyd'ers have a problem with traffic discipline, i think its more coz of lack of infrastructure. think abt it, the roads r lacking, they r always crowded, the roads r not wide enuff to fit all the vehicles, ppl have just given up, imagine the city has roads like for eg., Delhi, we would definitely have better discipline, u dont need to break a red light. here its like survival of the fittest. So i wouldnt hastily blame my brethren, but instead put the blame squarely on the City (govt.) to have brought about this chaos.

As far as the FM Channels r considered, ya its a sham, they call it a cosmo city, but why do these heavy telangana accented ppl or for that matter, heavy andhra accented ppl get on the freaking radio to be a f**ing RJ, play some music man, i am sick of ur 5 paise jokes.

The cons listed apply to other cities as well.
It all depends on which part of city you live and work.

But in case of Hyderabad, I live in Gachibowli, right next to Microsoft campus. There is really nothing wrong with the roads which, in my opinion, are excellent. But even on these excellent roads, people drive like they would drive on single-lane kaccha roads in villages.

FM channels are the same no matter where you live in the city.

I don't know why I need to travel for 40+ minutes from Gachibowli to get to a movie theatre that will play an English or Hindi movie.

Overall, in comparison with Bombay and Bangalore (the two other cities I have lived in), I find the crowd in Hyderabad is too "local". Even if the cosmopolitan crown exists, there is no single place to find them. Hyderabad needs a place like Bangalore's M. G. Road where like-minded cosmopolitan
people can hang out.
