R2I - unique situation

Post by R2I_meri_jaan »

I have an offer at a startup in Bangalore - I am heading the operations
My wife and kids do not want to move. Wife does not work

Has anyone been in this situation?
How do I transfer money every month for supporting family in US when I work in India and get salary in India?

R2I Meri Jaan,

Look on the main page of the forum and you will see subforums such as Finance, Community Lounge, R2I etc. Your post belongs in R2I sub forum. In addition, it specifically belongs to the thread Dilemma. Do a little search for Dilemma and you might find an existing thread to post into.

You can search by Using the Search feature in Navigation bar using the keyword dilemma or you can search by opening R2I sub forum and looking into the titles of various threads as they will be listed there when you open sub forum. Or you can open the Frequently Visited Threads (FVT) in R2I subforum and look for dilemma thread.

The above instructions would also be useful in future for other topics.

Is it worth it then for you to be 10K miles away from wife and kids?
Is it worth it for her?
Is there a timeline for this, like 6 months or so, in which case it is a one time?
Will you be making enough to support a non working spouse/family in US plus yourself?

Finding a way to transfer money is the least of your issues - go talk to ICICI, SBI or Citi, they can find a way for you. It is legal as per GOI to take out 100K per year.

You are getting yourself into a big soup here. Either you or she relent or go your own ways. I cannot imagine doing it for any job or salry.

You put it wonderfully. One has to decide one's priorities - not always easy though, but, absolutely necessary. Can't eat the cake and have it too :)

Cheers

Where there is a will - there is a way

Company I will be working for - will continue to pay my salary in USD, here in US.
Every month we will be transferring money from US to India via Citibank NRE account. I will be staying in my own home.
I continue to pay US taxes.

The assignment is for 3 years. I also get per diem maintenance charges when in India. Company is also paying for 1 yearly trip back home. My vacations stay as is. I get to maintain Indian Holidays.

wife and kids will visit once a year. Besides my job might bring me to US maybe 2 more times a year. So will be interacting with family once a quarter.

I am not looking to relocate to India completely.

Are you concerned about what impact this will have on your family?

NO. This is not war.

We will be seeing each other pretty frequently. Opportunities like these do not come knocking often. She is happy with kids and life in USA.

What's wrong in this?

OP,

Your post *seems* to indicate that you were asking for advice on how to deal with the fact that your family does not want to move with you, and how to convince them. Perhaps you should make it clear that discussing family is off-limits, and you were actually asking about the logistics of making things work (transferring money, etc). Perhaps you could drill down a bit more on what you were asking for.

There..you got my opinionated opinion now :emwink:
