Production Support/Systems Engineer Opportunities

Post by bestOfBothWorlds »

I actually posted this on other forum. Here it is again for larger audience.
Both of us are originally from Pune and want to move back in near future. My spouse is a Production support/Systems engineer with one of the financial companies who claims that there are not lot of job opportunities in his area of expertise in India. Is that true? Can somebody in that space throw some light on it?

There is a lot of demand for Sys Admins(Unix/Win/MF), Sys Ops (Job scheduling/1st or 2nd level Escalation) and Enterprise Sys Mgt Ops. They run in shifts (2 to 4 shifts per day).

Gartner predicts that all Offshore companies will have 60 to 70% of these type of roles in next 5 to 10 years.

Pune is the one of the Offshore center which is catering for many financial institutions.

You have not mentioned what exactly your spouse's area of expertise is. There is a huge demand for production support / tech support people in India. Most Indian IT folks prefer development work than QA/support kind of work (perceived as the lesser cousins/low profile work).

In fact, Indian IT rose to prominence with support/maintenance kind of jobs and still do lot of work in this area.
