Small # of R2Is in Mumbai - Mumbai Job Search

Post by amind »

hi,

I see very few R2Is in the Mumbai section. So most of you guys who are planning to R2I or have R2I-ed to Mumbai, how did you go about the job search process. Who are the best bets for job search while in USA. what are some good companies and how to get their attention.

I am planning to R2I late 07 or early 08 and need some advice from fellow Mumbaikars. I don't want to go to Blore or Pune as a first choice so any advice is greatly appreciated. Maybe the suburbs with minimal travel....

my exp profile: 14 yrs exp, Various 4GL tools, ERP + CRM, Peoplesoft, Siebel, Oracle. Project Mgmt and PMP. 10 yrs USA exp.

Also would like to know what other experience should i gain, to strengthen my profile and ease my job search when i am ready to R2I.

I am counting days.....Marine Drive, Bade Miyan, Delhi Durbar Biryani, Aksa Beach, Koliwada zinga and tandoori, those bike rides, my farm house in panvel, quarter bars of colaba and tardeo ;) .......those were the good old days, i guess nowadays kids just talk about malls, multiplexes, latest cars and John's bikes :)

Thanks,
Deepak

I was wondering about same thing. so little activity from Mumbaikars?

One of the reasons maybe that it is more expensive in Mumbai compared to small and medium cities in US. Non one is thinking of returning and look poor.

I also keep thinking how I will adjust in 1000 sq ft flat compaed to my 3200 sq ft home in US. I see threads about shipping stuff and I realize that I can ship but then I will have to give it away at the port because there is no space to keep stuff in my Mumbai apt. :emteeth:

I am in a similar boat as far as experience and have a similar profile (J2EE/Mgmt).
I am looking for Director or above jobs in IT field and did not receive any calls from Mumbai. I am receiving some response from Hyd/Blore though.
Other alternative is to start something on own but the commercial real estate purchase or leasing prices have already priced me out. Next hope is SEZ Maha Mumbai but that is 10 years from now.

I don't want to settle in any other city. Not even Pune. I worked 5 years in Mumbai before coming to US and two of them were in Noida. Noida was nice place (lived in sector 15-A) but so boring. Luckily my long hours did not leave much time to remain bored. :emwink:

Nothing against smaller cities. It is just the state of mind. If I have to live away from family and friends then r2i does not look that attractive. Nothing wrong with US either. We enjoy our life in Atlanta but India is where we really belong. :emdgust:

Mumbaikars. Please chime in.

IMO I'd like you take an unbiased look at other cities vis-a-vis Mumbai. Most other cities I think are now comparable to Mumbai in terms of coolnes factor. Also the biggest plus-es of Mumbai like uninterrupted power and water are thing of the past. I've installed an inverter this summer which my folks didnt need all along.
Also the job opportunities are much more in other cites as you must have found out already. 10 years ago my vote was titled in favor of Mumbai. right now its pune, blore, hyd or chennai

I just meant that because I am from Mumbai I want to return to Mumbai. :)
I know that other cities have come a long way and actually envy people who can return and buy independent houses in those cities on large plots. Good for those people.
I probably will have to settle with a weekend home somewhere near Mumbai.:emsad:

Any mumbaikars interested in building a community somewhere near Mumbai? Like Karjat/Neral/Aksa beach etc.?

Hey,

I will be retring to Mumbai next month.
As my take is once we land , then will find the job, As
many companies do not entertain unless candidate is in India /Mumbai.
Thats a plan for now , plus there is a job fair coming up in santa clara, CA area but mostly compnaies target for all non-mumbai cities :-( like pune, hyd, b'lore, etc)

Let us see.
I have around 13+ years and recent in SQA, so will look for SQA mangager in software field

see ya

hi, Goodluck with your job search once you get to Bombay. And congratulations on your decision to move back. If you can then keep us informed about your journey through your job search once you get there.

Since i have been thinking about moving back, everytime i watch bollywood movies, i try to put myself in those scenarios like: would i like to drive in that commotion, can i take high end sports bike or cruiser and still cruise thru the traffic and the overfilling footpaths, sit in the serpentine traffic lines(pretty similar to CA) , travel in the Lalu-ways(who is siphoning high revenue earning Bombay share to Bihar and UP ticketless travel), fit into the 1300 sq ft after being spoiled and pamered in the 2700 sq ft and the backyard, et al....

But home is where the heart is and heart is beating stronger for R2I. Only if the right job opportunity comes up in Bombay. It would be a painful decision to move to any other city and also makes me wonder why. If one can't R2I to where one wants to go then USA is still the best place in the world. Hope they create more IT opportunities for Bombay........

Wish and hope that every R2I carries all the great things we learned in this country back to our motherland. We all have been lucky for this experience and we should find ways and means to give back. It could start with simple things like planting a tree, or volunteering time at a school, donating,etc..........one leads to another.

thanks,
Deepak
