Does Hyderabad have the worst traffic discipline among Indian cities?

Post by aashishg »

I've lived in Mumbai and Bangalore before, and just moved to Hyd. I think the traffic discipline is just missing here ... people driving on the wrong side, changing lanes without indicator or even without glancing in the rear view mirror, and jumping red lights all the time -- and all this right in front of impotent traffic policemen, who don't enforce any rules.

Part of the problem is the zillions of cabbies in/around hi-tech city who drive really rash. But the sad part is that I see educated-looking people also driving like bozos, without any courtesy for others on the road.

That is easily what I miss the most about USA -- the traffic discipline and courtesy among drivers. Very frustrating to drive in India.

I've scratched my brand new car twice within 3 weeks of buying it. Some of that can be attributed to me getting re-adjusted to Indian driving conditions. But mostly its the astounding disregard for any rules by Hyderabad's drivers.

It's as if they don't even know why those lines for demarcating lanes are drawn on the roads :emangry:.

Essentially it seems to me that people (drivers) in Hyderabad aren't ready for the kind of expansion this city is experiencing. It is aspiring to become a metro, but people are still stuck with a small-town mentality -- at least as far as driving style is concerned.

Fully agree.

If you want to avoid scratching, bending, denting, and hitting, You need to be "Steering" in stead of driving on HYD roads. Just let your car glide wherever you find a space on the road as long as it is in the direction of your travel. I learnt it hardway, after a couple of scratches on my car.

Can you imagine vehicles taking U-turn on fly overs? And how about two-wheelers being lifted on the road dividers to cross-over to the other side? It really is pathetic!

hi .
Will tell you a experience ..the day i posted the previous quote .i had an accident on the Necklace road which is supposed to one of the freeway kind of a road in the city. I hit a cyclewala ,with my bike (was wearing a helmet)who was taking a sudden right turn from the extreme left, luckily i escaped with brusies on my right leg . Now the roads are looking new to me.

Now planning to go out only in my car.
Hope i reach home safely today.

This is so true -- I drive a lot in HYD when ever I go back and I find the best way to drive is NOT necessarily expect or wish you could follow US rules and traffic common sense, but instead learn to SEE the SPACE. You need to go from one empty spot to the next -- with constant eye/hand/head communication with the motorists that are also eyeing your empty spot :)

It's easier said than done, i don't feel like I've come close to really learning the Zen of driving in HYD.

Pointing it on hyd is not fair, its common site even in Mumbai and Banglore with fierce looking people!

Dont u think you are applying US rules on Indian roads? they never worked dont think it will work in future. We were never compassionate to our fellow drivers think it will remain like that, with that assumption, its better to drive safe than sorry.

Sorry for the guy who bumped into the cyclewala, you r supposed to look 360 degrees while driving [I know it doesnt make sense, but thats how it has always been, dont u think?]. If this is your rant, am with you. Do you have a solution? If it is specific to Hyd, what should a Hyderabadi do differently that a Mumbaikar or a Banglore needn't have to?

Sorry got bit carried away when u narrowed it to Hyd alone! You are generalizing taking a particular example.

What if you bumped into a cow? Is it that the Hyderabadi cow doesnt have traffic sense?
