I was recently in Bangalore with my son for 2 weeks(sept 2007) and decided to buy him a Wii console and to my shock i couldn't find any readily available. With my huge contacts around the city all i found was promises of it being ordered from Singapore or Dubai. In India the consoles only get popular if the game is available for 100-200 rupees, these Wii games cost rs2500+ so its beyond even the rich kids there, so an obvious failure to buy this unit. Further, you will have issues of gurantee if you require one as i am not sure if it has an official outlet there(one to be researched).
I eventually bought the Wii from Dubai on a break to London and MADE SURE IT WAS CHIPPED. This is similar to the PS2 CONSOLE where you can play copied games and hence the cost to account for is that of the console, as games can be downloaded from the net. At the moment my son downloads the ps2 and wii games from the net. These games when released cost £20-40 in the UK .
I think you should seriously reconsider on the basis of availability and affordibility of these games and go for a chipped ps2 which costs about 8-9k in India and games 100-200 rupees. This way you will have more peace and the kid more enjoyability with something practical for the area of the world he/she lives.
However if you were thinking of taking one back to the US, then I would personally buy one from the USA for warranty issues, however, i bought mine from Dubai cause it was chipped.
Another option is also buy a mini version of the Wii which is a nintendo ds, the one with dual screen, those are readily available with good high street electronic retailers anywhere in India and the games aren't very expensive, but still pricey compared to the copied ps2 games. Hope this helps.

Buy a wii from US and get it mod'ed, so it will be region free & play any  wii games. Wii casing doesn't have any factory seal, in case if you are worried! I've my Wii mod'ed and re-cased in black, have a look here (towards last posts)

You should be able to buy Wii in USA and play it in India if your tv supports both NTSC in PAL.

The Wii being locked only refers to the fact that it can only play the games of a particular region, so if you are buying a Wii in USA you will have to buy all games from there in future (unless you get it moded).

there are 3 versions(japanese,us and pal) if you are getting it chipped, and currently the firmware that is running on these wii is a 3.1. Most new games come with updates built n em, if you play any game other than the region for which the wii is chipped for, it will get semi bricked, as in you won't be able to use certain options, so careful with that. However if you wanna prevent the bricking of the wii, download a progamme before burning the game and this prevents the updates. If you are getting it chipped just get the help online, most of the info is there.

pune_destination;68140Hello,

I bought my Wii last year (Dec'96) in SAM's and have been using it in India since the last 6 months. No issues as such, still purchase the games in US and get it shipped here through friends.

Make sure to purchase a 220V adapter for the wii on the internet (19.99 USD), works well in India.

I have a wii here in Us and planning to take that to India. Can I get it modchipped in India. What would be the cost. I can even buy a mod chip here and take that for someone to chip that for me. I am not very handy and am afraid that I would break something in the process.
