Do R2I'ers do a change of address to a friends place in a different state? or is it advisable to get a P.O.Box at the Post Office?

@#2,

Is it part of the change of address mail forwarding service or a paid service that will be available as long as you wish?

I gave my Chennai address to local office in Bay Area. Even after a year I am still getting forwarded mail. In fact, I once got a parcel forwarded here for an iPod accessory (without any duty).

You are legally required to give Indian address to DMV and IRS. Having an Indian address still allows you to retain your drivers license. IRS sends your cheques and forms to Indian address without any problems. One advantage of a foreign address is that you get an automatic two month extension for filing.

Brokerage firms such as Schwab require a local address for which you can give a friends.

And if I'm not wrong, this service is only available to US citizens. Am I?

I opted out of credit card offers and direct marketing mailing list, probably have to do a credit freeze with the 3 agencies

How do we opt out of credit card offers and direct marketing mailing list?
What is credit freeze, is it time-bound (ie for x months only), and are there fees for this service?

Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT (567-8688) or visit www.optoutprescreen.com to opt out of credit card offers. Credit freeze is a lock on your credit scores so no company can see your score. Usually, several companies look up your info without your knowledge and send you marketing materials. Ideally, you do not want too many "lookups" on your credit report. There will be a charge (about $10 per agency) to freeze or unfreeze your credit score. Once you freeze your credit, it will be permanent unless you unfreeze it. You need to freeze it at all 3 credit bureau's - Experian, Trans Union and Equifax. It's recommended you do it after R2I and not before. If you do it before R2I and you want to setup a new cell phone account or a new cable connection or something, you will not be able to do so and as the company cannot check your credit score because it is locked.

DMA (Direct Marketing Association) is an organization which has a *huge* database of customer addresses. Most companies "rent" these addresses and mail you marketing stuff. If you're getting a lot of junk snail mail, you can instruct DMA to take you out of their database and your junk mail will stop considerably. The last time I checked there was a charge of $2 for this service and this is permanent, per my knowledge.

Hi, Does anyone know if the following institutions accept international address (India) with no other formalities.

1. IRS - someone said yes to this earlier
2. Social Security Administration (the yearly statement they send) - Dont want to give friend's address etc. Cause anyone opens it they know all you earnings for last 10-15 years.
3. DMV - someone said yes to this earlier
4. Credit Card / brokerage and bank etc. can be handled on case by case basis - and statements can be made electronic -
I opened a USBank checking and savings account - they have no direct deposit requirements / minimum transactions etc. / no monthly fees for checking acct.
Bill pay is free.
Brokerage acct may need some more forms to be filled up if you want to give them international address.
5. USPS : It is good to know USPS can temporarily forward mails to India address (good for any refunds from utility etc. / school STAR reports etc.)
6. MisseD any other important institution ? (I didn't include INS assuming citizen)
