Insurance for parents coming to US on visitor visa

Post by mumbaikar »

Want first hand experience from people who have used insurance for their parents coming to US on Visitor visa.

I checked on google and the site such as immihelp and path2usa. But thought of asking it to members here, if anyone has some good experience about any particular insurance company.

They will be here for 2.5 months.

Thanks,

My mom is here and my inlaws are visiting next week.

They are taking insurance from ICICI Lombard in India. See link http://www.icicilombard.com/app/default.asp

I went through my mom's coverage. With a $100 deductible the coverage looks pretty decent (upto $100,000). My mom is 49yrs old and the coverage costs for 6 months came about Rs. 17,000. But my father-in-law is over 60 and his coverage costs came about Rs. 30,000 for just 3 months :emdgust:

The ICICI insurance also acts as travel insurance like lost luggage benefits, missing connecting flight benefits, loss of passport and so on. Overall I think it is pretty good.

check out

"patriot america" and "protection america" are good , this is like PPO type and you get a ID like what we get for us .

Always for the comprehensive covrage plan.

Checkout this thread here in r2i

What I have heard in genral is that the insurance that we buy from India is not good because you will never get any money from them , also you have to pay from your pockect everything first before you can claim and get anything

If you but the insurance from her like the one above then they have some contracted rate ( it works like a ppo) if nothing else you will get a contracted rate ( I hope you know what I mean by the contracted rate)

No insurance products covers for for pre-existing condition .

Thanks

I was on the same boat at ard the same time last year

from a few friends gathered that for insurance bought in india, they heard horror stories abt the customer care if u ever had to use the insurance. you may end up having to pay upfront and get reimbursed later. that was a big put off for me and went with atlas insurance for my inlaws..costed ard $2k for 5 months

thankfully never had a situation to use them

Thanks for info stup..just a few additional questions -
1. My parents landed yesterday and will be here for a month. Can we still purchase the Atlas america option once parents are in country?
2.I am looking at $100 deductible and then 80% paid by insurance till 5k and 100% to 100k max limit. It allows us to use PPO network etc. They will be here for 3 weeks. I think this should be adequate (they also have their India insurance)..but any thoughts on any of the above?
3. In emergency situations how does the insurance work? I mean does one show India or American insurance or use both?

Thanks.

I used Patriot America PPO plan for my in-laws and bought them after they landed in US. For month and half, I paid around $92 for FIL and for 6 months I paid around $440 for MIL. Try insubuy.com for quotes.

Insubuy had id on this forum and he should be able to chime in
If you already have Indian Insurance and this is just for emergency,I wouldnt bother for such a short term. Emergency is always treated in US

1. My parents landed yesterday and will be here for a month. Can we still purchase the Atlas america option once parents are in country? - Yes,Unlike Insurance from India which should be bought before they travel Atlas/Patriot can be bought anytime for any length
2. I am looking at $100 deductible and then 80% paid by insurance till 5k and 100% to 100k max limit. It allows us to use PPO network etc. They will be here for 3 weeks. I think this should be adequate (they also have their India insurance)..but any thoughts on any of the above? - I wouldnt bother. Its not like they cant get medical treatment and even for emergency(touchwood) the kids arent made to pick up the tab3. 3.In emergency situations how does the insurance work? I mean does one show India or American insurance or use both? - US since one doesnt need to pay upfront

oasis138,

I would be glad to answer your questions.

1.
Unless they are physically located in the state of NY, they can purchase Atlas America even after arrival into the U.S.

You can purchase it online at http://www.insubuy.com/atlasamerica-insurance/

2.
$100k is a good limit. Please note that, in Atlas America, as long as you use the providers in the network and they bill directly, you don't have to pay 20% for first $5,000.

3.
It is always best to buy the insurance from the U.S. based company. Please read http://www.insubuy.com/guide/visitors-insurance-usa-india-comparison.jsp and also http://www.insubuy.com/visitors-insurance-reviews/ to understand why.

Therefore, I would recommend that you show the U.S. based insurance card in case you need to use it. However, please note that if the person is already sick and you try to buy the insurance after the fact, it would not be covered as it would be considered as pre-existing conditions.

I hope that answers your questions.

stup123,

It is always better to buy the insurance from the U.S. based company. Please note that most plans from India based companies provide only the fixed coverage plans for the persons above the age of 55 years, while you can get both the fixed and comprehensive coverage plans from the U.S. Please read http://www.insubuy.com/visitors-insurance/
Therefore, it is still recommended to buy the insurance for this person.

Please note that emergency treatment in the U.S. is not free. If the person has a life threatening emergency, the hospitals are required to stabilize the payment, irrespective of anything. However, they are not required to complete the treatment. Also, please note that most hosptials are private hospitals who are businesses run for profit. And they have learned their business the hard way. Therefore, invariably, whoever takes them to the hospital will actually have to sign the financial responsibility paperwork while the patient is being treated and that is how they will get to you. I have had enough personal experiences myself dealing with hosptials for my own family and also for many of our customers who have reported all kinds of stories over the years. Therefore, it would be very inappropriate to think that the visitors would be treated in emergency and their kids don't have to worry about. I am honestly informing of the practicla scenario rather than trying to scare someone or doing marketing.

I hope that answers your questions. If you have any additional questions, please visit our web site at http://www.insubuy.com or contact us toll-free at (866) INSU-BUY, 7 days a week.
