R2I and Higher Education

I am contemplating to R2I in 2008. I have a kid born in US who is 15 years of age and is in 10th grade. So one of the critical deciding factors is higher education. I am scouting for any R2I experience with kids around this age both positive and negative. I am interested to know how difficult it is for kids this age to adjust to the indian education system and the challenges they would have to face. If this is a duplicate thread, please let me know.

15yrs...is just too old. Please do not disturb the kid. Let him/her continue the education here. Honest advice. The best age is 6 and younger.

Higher education is very costly in India...especially if your kid does not get good marks in the 12th grade. I heard that a Medical Seat for an NRI in a well reupted college is around 1 cr in Tamil Nadu. On top of that, the Kid has to compete and complete the course.

There should not be any contemplation here in your case. Work here just for few more years....till she/he graduates from a college and then you can leave.

One of my friend left with 11 and 8 yr and they are going thru. hell.

I was in a similar situation but decided to wait another 2 year till my kid goes to college here. But if you really have to go then you can put the kid in International school (IB program) in 11th & 12th grade in India. Once he is done with school there you can work out options for college in India or US depending on where he gets admission

We are leaving in June 2008 as soon as my daughter, who is 17yrs old, graduates from high school. She'll be going to college in India. You can send kid to International school for 11th and 12th and then she can go to any college on NRI quota or foreign national quota which is what we are doing.

Pravi, If the kid can't get good marks in 12th grade, it is impossible to go to medical school in US. My older daughter is in medical school and I know how hard and how expensive the medical education in US is.

In my personal opinion, kids of any age will be okay as long as the parents brought them up with positive attitude and make them independent.

Don't have any idea about higher education (college) ..but if you can put your kid(s) in IB curriculum he/she should be able to adjust fine. I came back with an older kid myself. I have seen many families who came back with kids 9+ grade ..they are doing well and in fact enjoying more.

some things that can make the transition easier- get a place to live where they can easily find like mided kids ..I think whole of banglore would qualify;) but seriously you would need to buy/rent in high end areas ..open spaces, clubs ..spend money on these so they don't miss out on their "regular" activities that they are used to.- find good domestic help so you can spend time with family-international schools will hae many kids in the same boat..language is also not a problem..second language could be french or spanish.

In my opinion..its upto you to make it work ..a diff appoach may be needed when eturning with older child ..that's all. And there are some who cannot adjust anyway ..I have seen a family R2A because their 5yr old couldn't adjust.

Medical college seats are available in TN for any thing between Rs 30 to Rs 40 L depending on college. Much cheaper still in Karnataka.

Attraction to MBBS has gone due to software jobs. MBBS Dr gets Rs 10 to Rs 15,000 pm after 5 1/2 Years (which may go now upto 6 1/2 years due to 1 year compulsaory rural service). BE (software) guy gets about Rs 30,000 pm after 4 years, that too on campus placement

BE seats are available for about Rs 10 to Rs 15 L for the total course in many reputed colleges

My uncle R2Ied with 15 yr old daughter and 12 year old son. Daughter faced 12th board exam after first year and failed because Indian education system is knowledge based rather than intelligence based. Son is going to International school and happy.

Both kids were raised in a conservative family under control. They both seemed to be settled in India from outside (initially). But deep inside they missed US for couple of years. Now I feel that they have accepted India (after 2 year) without any regret.

BTW both kids were sent to India for vacation and after reaching India they were told that they are not going back to US!! Cheating in my view but it worked in hindsight.

I know a family who went back to India with their US born 15-16yr old daughter and 7-8yr old son (this was 5-6 years ago). Very outgoing girl who seems to have settled in without any issues and last I heard she was doing MBBS at Manipal. I think they paid a donation to the TA.PAI institute.

Thanks for providing input regarding this. I read that there are some kids who have moved at 15 years and there are some where the parents have held back till 17 to complete their 12th grade and then moved to India. I know it based on a case by case by basis. But based on what you know, is it better to R2I after 12th grade, or it makes no difference?

The reason for waiting is not exactly for her to finish high school, but my older one just joined medical school and we wanted to wait for 2 yrs so that she can settle down in school before leaving her. Just make sure you satisfy the NRI quota criteria with the schools you are interested in, then you'll be okay. It just worked out that way.
