This is assuming that you can get a job in India that will pay you well enough letting you maintain your lifestyle as you have it here in US. A couple of examples would be corruption, poor infrastructure, pollution etc.

For me it will be the lack of morals that is worsening by the day-be it corruption, lack of empathy towards other humans, and everything driven my money. Sorry that I could not come up with ONE single factor.

The biggest disappointment is the soaring cost of living especially with respect to real estate. Rental costs or owning costs are roughly half in absolute dollars relative to Bay Area. What would cost you to rent a home of $3k in Bay Area would cost you at least $1500 in a small metro like Chennai. Same goes for apartments. Bombay is probably similar in costs (if not higher than most places in the US).
Since most returnees tend to make the same or less in absolute income, the home ownership cost can feel painful if you already don't own a place to your liking.
Hard to believe as it may be, we rarely come in contact with Govt officials or corruption on a day to day basis. In 18 months of stayinghere, I never had to bribe anyone.
Other issues such as pollution may seem like an issue from the US. But I haven't come in face to face contact with them. When I travel to the US, I don't feel that the air there is any fresher.
The second most painful thing to deal with (at least in larger metros) are traffic but it is no worse than in any US city. How easy is it to find parking in NYC or San Francisco? At least here you can get a driver.
The third most painful factor to deal with is the lack of good beer, speciality vegetables & spices, quality clothes and accessories. We usually wait for our periodic US trips to load up on those. Seafood in most of India is suspect due to potential mercury contamination.

Infrastructure or rather lack of it

My biggest problem that would prevent me from R2Iing is India's increasing population, All development efforts are useless if population growth is not controlled. Look at the rush on airports, rail stations, malls.

The reason why airports are crowded is not because of India's population growth (which is about 2% a year) but rising affluence of millions of Indians and infrastructure that has not yet caught up with that.

Well, 2% of 100 crore= 2 crore; land, water, clean air cannot keep up with this this. it may be deceiving to go by %, go by numbers.

Air Fares are so cheap these days in India and that's one of the reason why the airports are crowded as people can afford to go by flight.
