Ann arbor- michigan??

Post by Akimohan »

folks,
Anyone staying in and Around Ann Arbor in Michigan? My friend is coming for a job to Ann Arbor.. and his wife is into her 6th month of pregnancy.
For both of them, its the first time in US.So, i am trying my ways to help them out - like apartment finding, car buying etc..
If anyone, live in that area, please share your experiences..
If he gets IDP(international driving permit), will it help him to drive in michigan??

Most of the Indian communtiy in Ann Arbor is located around U. Mich. so that might be a better area to stay from a social point of view.

The ISA page on the umich website has a lot of good advice on housing in Ann Arbor:

NO. Michigan drivers are the worst of all. No kind of driving permit helps.

seriously though, yeah it should be okay. I drove on my IDP for six months before I got a license - however i never ran into any moving violation type trouble, so I don't know what happens if you do.

Lived in that area and it's a nice place to live and bring up a family. BTW, University of Michigan Hospital is amongst the best in the US. Ask him to find a good OB-GYN (Preferably someone who is a Prof as well) as soon as he gets there. http://med.umich.edu

He should be able to rent with a IDP. Ask him to keep away from the roads on friday and saturdays and he would be fine. (too many drunk students on the road during football season).

Check out www.rent.com for apartments. Ann Arbor has good public transport so, stick in the bus-route as he is new. www.theride.org

i would recommend the North campus area and areas on or just north of Plymouth drive in AArbor. that way you have access to the UM bus if that is important. There are also some grocery stores on plymouth road. There used to be a big apt community called WillowTree Apts in plymouth where lot of Indians live - probably still there.

Is he coming to work in the University?

Or work for a IT consulting firm (bodyshopper) based in Ann Arbor?

If he'll work for a desi bodyshopper, ask him to confirm his wife's pregancy will be covered by the medical insurance provided by his employer..
