Suddenly the US Dollar is loosing its appeal in India, just because US is going thru tough phase and India has a white-hot economy. These guys are so fickle. It may not mean a big deal, but to the US a majority of its currency is circulated outside the US and currently quite a few countries are looking to off-load Dollar reserves.
This is so typical of India and they wonder why the US is not an ally, do they think that US govt will not take notice, just wait for the next economic-cycle, as soon as the elections are over and US pulls out of Iraq.

The USD is the mosted hated currency in the world.

Countries have started realizing that their USD reserves are being used for useless expenditures (wars, subsidies to the US housing sector, etc) and do not want to keep funding the US. There's simply too much of excesses that need to be removed before any signs of improvement appear.

I say India should dump the USD and go for Euros or a basket of currencies.

Whats the issue with that. India is a sovereign nation, and should use only its currency for transactions within the country. It was a bad thing to go with USD first, but now if they correct that why woudl US care about that.

In this case it is better to denote admission prices in an appreciating currency than a depreciating currency. Flip side being that if done across the board then India could be less attractive as a tourist destination for people from USA.

The Indian reserve is flush with dollars and doesn't want more of this junk in their reserves.

What the Indian tourism dept can do is still accept USD $1 bills and return a few of these bills (cash back) to foreign tourists to be used as toilet paper.
