Malaysia raps Karunanidhi for "meddling"
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia told the chief minister of Tamil Nadu on Thursday to mind his own business after he complained about Malaysia's treatment of its ethnic Indians.
I thought Singapore discriminates both Malay and Indian and Malaysia discriminates both Chineese and Indian. Yes, Indians are the common denominator for both countries. ( I lived and worked in Singapore and Malaysia for some time. )
Should India intervene ?
I think not, because what have they done to India, when they are good ?
Several of them I spoke to speak/think lowly of India and Indians; They made me feel, the new money they found in their countries make them think, the Indians in India are lower class to them.
This is wrong opinion but it is difficult to explain to them. Obviously several of them never been to India and their parents and grand parents moved to work in rubber plantation and to do other labour tasks. ( some by voluntary and some by force ) And their knowledge about India comes from the stories told to them and also from Indian movies. ( corruption, goondaism etc)
Some time back there was bad treatment metted out to IT folks from India. And India took some actions to safeguard the interest of them. But remember they are Indian Citizens who went to work there temporarily; here we are talking about Malaysian Citizens of Indian origin.
Is there any one from Singapore, Malaysia region here ?
What are your views ? Do you think India should mind its business or give lecture to Malaysia about how to keep their house on order ?

I think we should lecture them. We keep getting lectured from all and sundry. So, why not?

I haven't lived in Singapore or Malaysia, but I feel that Indian govt. should mind it's own business in this case.
This is one situation where the LTTE has a real chance to prove what it stands for. :emsmilep:

I was outraged when this incidence happened to Indians (from India) in Malaysia few years back. At the time, there were news about Malaysian firms getting big infrastructure contracts in India to build the roads.
Same thing happened in Fiji few years back and in Uganda few decades back. It is all about the image that India and Indians can be pushed around without any consequences. For outsiders, all Indians are same, NRI or Indian citizens, Tamil or Punjabi, BJPwallah or Congressi. By ignoring plight of ethnic Indians outside, we do a disfavor to all of us.
Having said that, there is no point in just lecturing and making statements. If India has any leverage, it should be used to help ethnic Indian, otherwise maintain silence. It really sounds stupid, when we do not have any guts to stand against Malaysia or Fiji, and many Indians talk about taking on US, economically or militarily. I heard this several times during lunch conversations at work in India.
If Indians in Malaysia think low of India, the fault does not lie only on one side. Until recently when BJP gov came in power, India also never did any effort to make Indians outside feel one of their own. Rather than creating a strong network of NRI to help India, they were always made feel like traitors. Even today NRI's are required to pay higher fees everywhere in travel, schools, tourist destinations, etc. Sometime back PC made some statement regarding not needing $ any more which, I felt, was not in a good taste. People easily forget that it was the same NRI's who provided much needed foreign currency in no time in 1991 during currency crisis. Who knows, one mad mullah in power next door or one more Harshad Mehta could make the same thing happen again.
Regarding son of soil thing in Malaysia, it is for only those sons of soil, who are Muslims. In fact, non muslims are given inentives to leave the country and to take a citizenship of other country. A non muslim cannot get citizenship of Malaysia again if he has given it up once, while a muslim can do the same.

I guess Indians, particularly NRIs should voice their opinion to condemn the discrimination of ethinic Indians in Malaysia. I watched the BBC news item showing force used by Malay police against protestors and it was concerning. I thought Malaysia is one of the few oasis of stability among Muslim majority nations, but it was disheartening to see they acting like the more fanatic ones.

I know that ethnic South Asian Indians are there in over 100 countries in the world. Indian politicians can't voice their opinion about every place where Indians are abused/mistreated. However, NRIs should do as you never know when is your turn :emsad:

Discrimination of Malaysian Indians
Can some one post what discrimination is meted out to Indians in Malaysia? In Sri Lanka it was something like - a Tamil has to score certain mark say 80% (Idon't remember the exact figure) to get a seat for higher education while a Sinhalese could get the same seat with 60% marks. Are there any specifics like that in the case of Malaysia?

Strictly speaking, India should not intervene if the affected people are Malaysian citizens. If origin, ethnicity, relegion are criterias for intervening, India itself will be in trouble. Then, Islamic nations have to intervene for Gujarat issue. Iran and Persian countries have to intervene big time, based on the Aryan migration theory.
India has to move world bodies. It has to influence international organizations to intervene. It should present this as human rights issue.

This is the big LESSON for Non-R2I families (Living abroad for generations) and who give up indain citizenship.
There is no specific discrimination. They are not allowed to raise voice against the Govt, but Malays are allowed.
Now let me bring up the popular saying: Sthaana balam (power of crocodile when it is in water)
