I have been reading posts on R2ICLUBforums for quite sometime now and the members, suggestions are really helpful. Thanks for this forum.
I will be returning to India soon and I have a few questions regarding selling my car. I am planning to sell the car to a dealership as I can get the flexibility of keeping the car till the last date of return. The dealership also gave me a good quote and the difference between selling to a private party and the dealership is not too much.
My questions are:
Are there any issues selling cars to dealerships? They told me that they will not change the title to their name and the title will still be in my name. They will change it to the next owner after they sell it. So, I am just worried that if they get involved in some kind of accident, my driving record will go bad. Is this an issue or can I just go ahead and sell the car to dealership? Is there a way to safeguard myself from any tickets, charges after I sell my car? What are the precautions to be taken?
Your suggestions, comments and advice in this regard will be really helpful. Kindly post a reply.

Once you sell the car to dealer, you will be take off the license plates from the car and most of the states require you to return them. You will also keep the registeration card with your and as well cancel the insurance on car.
Dealer will put on dealer plates for any test drive for perspective customers.
You will have all the paperwork regarding sale to dealer.
Even if the title has not changed how would it affect your driving record?
Anyway if there is an accident involving that car, the license of person driving that car will be checked by police and dealer will have to file claim against dealership insurance policy. So, how can you get a ticket when you are not in driver's seat.

do we really need to return the plate after the car has been sold. I had 2 cars and sold one. I still have my old plate. do i need to give it back?

You need to check your state law.
PA does not require you to surrender the plates while in NY you have to surrender the plate otherwise you cannot cancel insurance.

nupita,
Thanks for your reply.
I went to the Tax collector's office today and they gave me a form. I need to fill it up with details of seller, buyer and send it by mail to the address provided in the form. Once that is done, they mark it as being sold to a new party. But, still the car remains in my name until the dealer sells it to another individual who should apply for a new title.
The lady at the counter did not know much about the change of license plates. But, she told me that generally once the car is sold and I take copies of all the paperwork, I should be fine and from then on it is the responsibility of the dealer to take care of the car and if anything happens to the car, dealer is responsible.
Interestingly, a person who was standing in the line next to me (an elderly person) overheard this and shared his story. He had sold his car (2 cars one after the other - Lexus and BMW) to a very well known dealer in the city. But, after an year or so, he got a ticket for not paying 'toll' at one of the highways and he had to run around to get this sorted out at the tax collector's office. So, he adviced me to send the form immediately.
I think sending the form is the only way to safeguard myself after selling the car. Even though it does not take care of everything completely since the title still remains in my name, it at least helps if there is something major.
Just wanted to share the info here. Thanks to all those who replied.

The Electronic Toll system for highway takes the picture of license plate of the car and then the collection is sent accordingly. I am guessing, he left his license plates on the car when the dealer took it.
Your DMV website should have the answers about what to do with the license plates when you sell the car.
