All.
I have been in the US for around 8 years. Have a GC and the kids are US citizens. I recently came back from India and feel it is the time to go back. Personally I have a great life here but it is that time that the parents need me. The job opportunity is good too . to lead the India operations of my company. This is something that I started and we have 8 people. The catch - It is in Hyderabad and i am originally from North. I think about the whole thing and reason out that i really do not have any choice since i want to be with the parents. Then i think, well HYD is going to be new for them too. In fact it is going to be new for me too. On the other hand I might not get this opportunity any time later. The company has talked to me to see if i can go for 2 years. I think that might be the best option considering i can take a re-entry permit and keep my option of getting citizenship. In reality i might never come back once i go back. Who knows (confused). Looking at this situation what should my best plan of action be
1. Go to HYD, stay there and grow this company.
2. Take a REP, go to HYD and evaluate after 2 years
3. Propose my company to open a centre somewhere else. That might be stupid considering we have 8 people. However i am only thinking about it since they might think i can do this again at a different city and how much do they want to depend on the leadership... i dont know .. it is kind of a riskky think to talk to them about this. However the HYD thing has been done from scratch by me. No involvement from the executive team.
4. Join a different company in the city of my choice
any other option i am missing. I am not from HYD and wouldnt like to settle there .. but i think i have no other option rather than giving it a chance. In the US i used to relocate from place to place whereever the project took me. It is sad that i have to do that again and cant make my own choices.

Relocating to new place is better to be in US.

#1,
I believe that you have to be clear about 'why' you are returning to india.
Is it staying with parents or staying with parents and relatives
in your city of choice (north)? If it is the former and your parents do not mind relocating to hyd with you, then its a no brainer, take the hyd offer. If it is the latter, then it will be a case of 'aasman se tapka aur khajur ke ped par latka', esp. if you can find a job in your city of choice, and your parents are unable to adopt to the new social support structure in hyd.
Unless you are getting an expat package (your US salary + additional perks), why take a 2 year detour to your city of choice? It will take you a couple of years to settle down again in India, and it will suck to uproot yourself and move to north again just when you are settling down.
The REP, GC to USC etc. are paperwork logistics that should be agnostic to your city or company of choice in India and shouldn't cloud the issue.
My 2 cents.

OP,
There is career and family for you to look at and evaluate accordingly.
1. Career: I would say look at what your company's options are.
a. Do they want it grown into a 50-100 people operation in the next 2-3 years?
b. If so, as you built it initially and grew it, would you continue/be made the MD or at least a VP of the Indian branch of the company?
c. Is the pay compelling enough?
If the answer is yes to (a) & (b), take it as this would be an excellent opportunity for you to be in Sr. management. Only caveat, do you have the skills/expertise/confidence to manage/deal with a growing company in India? If you are unsure, I would think you would be biting more than you can chew.
As for (c), say you got 10-12 yrs of experience and your pay is 35+L, I would say worth it. Anything below 25L, you may be able to get it in your home city. Between 25-35L, you would have weigh it based on answers to (a) & (b).
2. Family:
If your parents are very active socially (friends, relatives, moving around, social activities, etc.), moving them to Hyd would be a tough choice. If they are people who keep to themselves, I would say you can get into a nice high-profile apartment community (look for ones with 4-6 blocks with 300+ units with lot of amenities) where I think the grand-kids and other senior citizens in the complex will keep them occupied. Same will apply for your wife and kids too. Kids will find/make friends easily in these apt complexes (and the grand parents will be fun/great help for them). If your wife is active socially, these apt complexes will have ladies clubs, groups, etc. and can easily find like-minded friends. One quick way to make friends is to try to find the 2-3 schools (if your kids are school-going) where most families are sending their kids in these complexes and choose one amongst it.
Overall, your 2-yr sabbatical within the company gives you better options. I do not see you getting the same options with other companies. I would say it takes about 3-6 months to settle in a place in India, not years. I felt US takes 1-6 months when one relocates (basic necessities are quick but social circle takes long time). Even if you decide to move later, companies in India do pay for relocation packages (and more so at the senior level).
p.s.: Apt living: I concur with this post.

OP - If I were in your shoes I would take the opportunity at Hyd and return and in a couple of years look for an opp in the home town. Lot easier considering you are in India and have Indian exp now. Also if parents have waited this long they can with a little longer and besides even if they dont want to come and live in Hyd they can make several visits without bothering about visa, medical etc.

The single most reason to go back is parents health. It has not been well recently and is getting worse by the day. They do have an active network in their home city right now but i think will be more than happy to sacrifice that and live with their son and grand kids.
The company may grow to a max of 15 people in India and yes, i can talk and ensure that i am the MD etc of the company. Salary i dont know what to expect but i think 25L + is for sure. My only concern is R2I to HYD since i am not from that culture and the language. But then, I dont think i have a choice. The choice (whether i have or not) is what confuses me. I want to take the REP so that i have an option open just in case. Can someone give some more details on EXPAT?
Thanks for your opinions. Helps to look at the situation from a higher level.

In your case, I would suggest take REP and also get your company to apply for N-470 as the plan is for 2 years. By that, you maintain residency continuity of your GC.
When you say north, I am assuming you will have only 2 choices - Delhi and surroundings, Chandigarh. With regards to Hyd, I don't see a major problem as the main lingo is mostly Hindi/Urdu than Telugu. If you know Hindi, you would be better off than the local guy who just knows Telugu. As a booming city, English is also accepted well.
I may be politically incorrect here. Anyway, Hyd has some areas which are predominantly Muslim. With out knowing your food habits and religion, if you can stay in some of the more higher end apartments built by reputed builders closer to the IT pockets, you would do fine with regards to the blend of people as neighbors. If you are Muslim and are non-veg, most of Hyd should be open for you. Overall, Hyd is highly "non-veggie" because of the huge Muslim population.
Schools, lifestyle, culture, etc. - I would say it is as good or as bad as any of the other Indian metros. Movie crazy city though.

Thanks TMUS. Do you have any idea of what kind of relocation package to ask for? Any other things i should negotiate. Remember, my company does not know abt the personal front and they might be more than happy that i am leaving since India is a very important part of our business.
I will need to dispose everything before i leave. Though i will get REP i might never come back.

I have come up with the following plan. Can people please input their comments.
1. Go to India with a REP and ask the company to apply for N-470 if possible
2. Evaluate after 2 years, if i feel i can come back for a short stint in the US to get a citizenship, come back (highly unlikely but atleast an option is there)
3. If number 2 turns out to be a NO, give up GC and become an Indian resident.
4. Ask my company to send me as an expat
Does this plan look OK? I have some questions
1. During the first 2 years in India, I will still be a US resident and file my taxes right?
2. Can I continue to keep all my assets in the US ?
3. After 2 years can I claim the RNOR status and transfer my assets
Please comment. I am looking to finalize this this week with my company.
Thanks for all the help

Guys
Is the option 3 in my original post not even worth to bring up? If i could do that, it would solve my R2I issues.
