I have been working in quite a well known organisation as a team lead in quite a high profile project for the past few years. I would say my career has gone downhill in terms of job satisfaction for the past year and I started actively looking out for a better role. I recently got offered a senior role at a small company. The offer to me is fantastic, they offer flexi work timings, better pay + benefits and the best part for me is work place is closer to home so I can drop my daughter at childcare an hour late and pick her up earlier.
Here is my issue, the company that has offered me the role deals with online gambling. Now there could be, ethical implications for me and also any potential employer later on. Im very confused how something like this might be viewed on my resume when I R2I. Even though its not something that I approve of, given my situation (little one and wife in full time job) I am trying to prioritise family over career and would look at this as a job to pay my bills and help reach financial goals for the next 2 years at least. I would in effect be going from a high profile job to something of a lower profile company - purely for family/ financial reasons.
Am I damaging my career? I am not sure if anyone would have been in similar situation but any advise is welcome.

So long as you keep yourself to a technical role and develop useful skills, you will be covered from a future employment standpoint.
The bigger question is whether it will affect your job satisfaction. If it presents moral dilemmas and keeps you from doing your job well or enjoying your job, then you may get disillusioned quickly and this may lead to severe frustrations. This issue needs some introspection on your part and no one can help you understand your own psyche (at least not here). You may want to have detailed discussions with your family and close ones. Reaching out to a psychologist may also help. Or may be you know the answer to that question of moral dilemma already. What are your thoughts?

I agree with CD ...if this job helps you develop your skills then nothing wrong with that.
The IT job market is so hot these days (and especially in India) that no one will really bother what organization you worked for, as long as you did well and produced results for them.
By the way, every heard of Anurag Dikshit? he is an Indian entrepreneur who runs an online gambling site called PartyGaming. He is 35 years old and has a net worth of $1.75 billion which makes him among the richest Indians in the world.
Online gambling is no mean business. If you have the domain knowledge and have the technical knowhow, there are companies that will pay you top dollar to be on board. This is gonna be big business in the futuere - once all these baby boomers patronizing Las Vegas pass way, the next wave of gamblers will be the online generation - people who shop & socialize online. Guess where they will go to gamble away their retirement savings?

Sounds like the benefits are
1) Closer to home and so more time with your little one
2) Change of environment
3) Potentially, this could be good since India also has online gambling sites these days
4) More money
and the cons are
5) Dont know if you have mental make-up to work in a gambling site
6) Small company
7) Stability(Is the new company stable???)
8) Future Resume needs to mention online-gambling
My comments:
#2 - this could be good or bad depending on your psyche. Do you like change or hate it?
#3 - more research needed
#4- Is this worth it considering 5,6,8?
#5 - This is a big one. If your day to day work involves moral dilemmas that can be draining.
#7 - if the small co is very much stable, then this can be ruled out
#8 - May be a problem inIndia. However, you can mention in generic terms "online gaming" or something more smoother to convey the same point. Or focus on the BREADTH of industries you have worked in , instead of dwelling on Onl. Gambling.
Net net - moral dilemmas is a big one. If this doesnt work out in 6 mos, how feasible is it to get a diff job and move on in your same location? Remember I say same loc. since you have a daughter due to schooling/daycare etc.

What is wrong in gambling? It is an entertainment for millions and it helps so many people to have a living. It is a legitimate business. The so called ethics of our tradition are highly questionable. Online gaming, Online gambling are very attractive domains.

Thanks everyone for posting your views and especially anandr2i your points were well worth it and very helpful in my consideration. Apologies for not replying earlier, I took a couple of days to contemplate my decision. I have opted to accept the job. I agree with layman that certain ethics might be questionable but when we have to go back to operate within that tradition, we have to respect the code of conduct within that tradtion. I was more worried about what others would think when I R2I than my ability to fit into such an oraganization. I'm taking things as they come, thanks once again to each of you guys.
