shopping for a suv

Hello everyone, I am shopping for a SUV (in USA) and I'd appreciate your opinions/advise. I am totally new to SUV (I have only had a sedan so far) and all I am looking for is

-- a reliable car
-- bigger than regular sedan and versatile to carry most common household furniture such as small chairs, tv stand (from store to house so I don't have to pay for delivery)
-- for at least 5 people (passenger + driver)
-- decent gas mileage
-- not so expensive (or luxurious)..

I would like to understand couple of models before I can go to a dealer / seller. Can someone please give me some lead?

What is your budget or max limit for the SUV? Do you plan to haul stuff like boat or go up the mountain for skiing?

Toyota RAV-4 is a good choice as it comes with V6 but it is a small SUV.

Toyota RAV-4 is a good choice as it comes with V6 but it is a small SUV.

RAV 4 can get pricey once you tag on the options. I think the CRV will give you the best bang for your buck.These days, the supply of 08 models is very tight, especially if you are looking for the EXL or the EXL with Navigation. The range is low 20s for the LX to 28K for the top of the line. The top of the line RAV4 is 30plus and yes, you get a V6.

If u get close to 30k , then Honda Pilot is good option or u can go
for 2-3 yrs used Honda Pilot.
I believe Rav4 and CRV both charge too much premium for their japanese
origins.

My budget is max 20k. I know I will have to look for pre-owned in this range. I don't plan to haul big stuffs. All I need is a cargo bigger than a sedan trunk. I will check out MDX, Lexus, RAV4, CRV and Pilot.

Few more questions:

1. I saw that RAV4 v6 MSRP costs about 7K more than the 4 cylinder. Is the v6 really worth extra 7k?
2. While buying pre-owned, I know I have to check the car facts... but is there a way that I could check to make sure that the car is free from bank loans?
3. With Honda suvs, is there any road noise issue? I have Civic that has road noise, my friend has Accord that has road noise issue as well.

All Hondas have road noise. Honda's are known for good road-handling.

Are you sure, you are looking for SUV?. The best vehicle for your requirement would be Van
With out second thought go for Honda Odyssey.

I heard Toyota Sienna is better than Honda Odyssey. I heard a mechanic say that Honda Odyssey is known to run into some specific issue (I don't remember now) after 10s of thousands of miles.

If you wait until spring, Subaru is releasing its redesigned Forestor. Forestor provides a lot more thrill than the Rav's and the CRVs.
