Indian IT: Title Stucture Survey

Post by tejasvee »

I am trying to educate myself with the most current title (designation) structure in India, specifically IT companies. Hereby I invite those with more info to share it here. I am sure with a number of IT folks working in mid to senior level mangement in India, this survey can get a good deal of 2007/2008 level details.

Thanks in advance!

Detail:
An example of a food chain in an IT company would be;
Junior Developer --> Developer --> Sr. Developer --> Tech/Team Lead or Architect --> Sr. Lead/Architect --> Development Manager --> Sr. DM --> Associate Director --> Director --> Associate VP --> VP --> CEO/President etc..

Other Areas in which you can contribute here in addition to a sample title structure from your organization:
1. What are the most current trends as people come up with very innovative 'filler' titles in between?
2. How are the titles different from product v/s service oriented companies?
3. How are the titles different in board managed v/s privately held company?
4. If you care, please map the work experience range (like 12-15 yr exp, with five yrs. of managment) for the higher positions.
5. Typically, there will be multiple paths after reaching a mid-manager level. So feel free to map all available paths beyond 10 yrs. exp range.
6. How is Indian title structure compared to US structure for a similar company? If you have experience in both areas, this can also be mapped.

I am fairly clear of the structure below 10 years of exp range. I am really interested in finding out the food chain between 10 and 25 years exp range.

Thanks for your time again.

The chain in a typical Indian service company would be

For a vertical like a line of business (BFSI, Retail, manufacturing, Telecom , Energy Etc)

PM --> SPM --> Program manager/Account Manager(Multiple projects for same account) ---> Delivery manager (Multiple Small Accounts) --> Regional Banking projects manager (For that region pune/gurgaon/chennai etc) ---> GM banking(All Banking Projects) ---> VP or EVP or president BFSI all BFSI projects --> COO/CEO

For a horizontal (Line of technology) it would be similar just replace banking by say SAP--> ERP and BFSI by enterprise solutions(ERP, CRM, SCM)

FOr product companies there are different development managers. There there are delivery managers(for dev, implementation and support) then there is a product manager . If your Product is fairly large in revenue and complexity you would get to a VP position.

A guy managing a group of products would go to SVP or EVP positions

In a high-tech MNC (product development company) below is the range:

Software Engineer I (Btech) --> II (2 or Mtech) --> III (5) --> IV (8)

From here, it can be technical ladder:

Technical Leader I (11) --> II (14) --> Principal Engineer (17+)

or management ladder:

Manager I (10) --> II (12) --> III (14) --> Director I (16+) --> II --> VP --> SVP --> EVP

Beyond Sr.Director levels, the experience level doesn't matter, what you have accomplished matters.

Titles/Roles are a big farce in India. That much I can say with confidence.
When you apply just apply for a VP/Director role. Thats all. There was an article in the Times couple of days ago on the subject.

While there is a level of farce with regards to external customers, especially for billing purposes, internally your title will determine how much respect/regard rest of the people within your company will give you. Internally, your title will determine if people will listen to you and do what you say.

When I say title, I mean a level of expectation i.t.o job responsibility and a role that encompasses it. It is not something to do with whether people listen to you and do what you say. That is misplaced. As far as I am concerned, the roles that you would have for the title in comparison to what you would have there - if that is how you wish to benchmark - would be skewed beyond imagination.

Services companies work differently than a product oriented firm. I have experiences in product oriented firms only. I will also disagree that people listen to you depending on your title. Being senior most technical guy on a product track, I have experienced people completely ignoring what I say and also had management turn a deaf ear. I guess this is true of every technical line here. Even the lowliest mgmt. guy is considered superior to the greatest technical guy here. Go figure.

My experiences, thats all.
