Develop new poll for "how much is enough" thread?

Post by KRV »

I wanted to bring the subject popular thread to the attention of TAT. Over the last several months, I have seen how the data from this poll is cited as the final authority to the dismay of other, mostly newer members insecure about their own financial position to R2I.

I recall mentioning it to Desi once about the undue influence the poll has on the forum members, given that this is nowhere close to a scientific poll. Also, I have responded to some posts in the past where this poll data is cited as "fact". As a more recent example, today, I saw this thread where the OP laments about not having the "required" savings to R2I, clearly influenced by the poll.

Given the importance of the "how much is enough?" question to R2Iers, may I request the admin. to develop another poll where the same question is asked but the responses are segmented by age group, intention to work upon R2I or not, current income level, years lived abroad, net worth etc. - that is, segmented by key categories that influence the final figure. The data from such a poll - even if cited by other members (which we can count on!) - will have some reliable basis for others to compare with depending on their own personal situations.

Subject to the caveat that I have not done it and so can be wrong, my understanding is that any member can design and post a poll - one does not need Admin to do that. If true, my suggestion to you will be to feel free to design one and post and leave Admin to do just Admin.

Bobus,

I tried creating one in the past but could not do any segmentation that this would entail. Since IT is not my core skill, that may be why. That said, I don't believe in limiting what is a voluntary job by Admin. team members to just Admin. work. After all, some of the TAT (current/former) are the inspiration behind this forum and these financial issues were discussed (often vigorously) by RRK/Desi and others in the old MSN forum. If you are able to create a new poll, please do so at your convenience. Almost any poll addressing the above factors may be better what we have now.

Members who are Admin are free to engage in activities/discussions as members - I have consistently supported it in other threads - so that was not what I intended to convey when I asked that Admin be left to do just Admin - I was suggesting that they be not burdened with something that a member can do on his/her own. Of course, as a member you are free to ask for help, and members who may be on Admin team or not, are free to help or not help. As for me, am not inspired to design such a poll.

if anyone is creating a new poll, please post a draft of the questions/data points. Others can chime in to refine it so that we don't miss out any useful info. Once poll is created and polled, it is difficult to change it.

KRV and others,

We can setup a new poll calling it "How much is enough - 2008".
We can close the current poll.

We have new members, new strength, new mix.

Let us first chart the questions and choices in this thread. Then worry about how to set it up for voting.

As Bobus said, member can setup the poll themselves. If it needs to be edited, admin can help. But in this we will lend a hand.

Any thread can have a poll. When a new thread is created and a choice was given at the first post for creating a poll. Admin can add a poll to any existing thread. But only one poll can be setup per thread.

Mutliple choices are available, but I am not sure how we can design one which can capture many details of the voter.

But coding comes later, let us design one on paper.

I think it will be better to have a poll which takes into account age groups, atleast <35 , 35-50, and >50. In these 3 age groups, saving vary from around 100-200K int he first to more than a million in the 3rd...
