Reclining Furniture Feedback needed

Hi,

We are looking for Living room furniture. As part of this we were looking at
Reclining sofas and loveseat. Since we never had reclining stuff, I had few
concerns
1) how reliable is reclining mechanism, does it start to fail or become
mis-alligned after few years.
2) In case of move, how does reclining sofa hold up?
3) How comfortable (i mean to back) is reclining? Does it lead to back issues
later on.
4) I was looking at Ashley reclining sofas and Lazyboy ones. Lazyboy is
much more expensive, does that translate to better reliability or just extra
moneyfor brand.

Any other brands u would recommend

In general, Why is plain looking furniture so expensive in USA?
Is it becos of better wood used, better quality or expensive labor.

We plan to r2i in near future, I was wondering, should i spend a lot now and
buy expensive and reliable sofa now and take it with me or buy one which
will last me few years and dispose it when i r2i.
How reliable and sturdy is furniture in India? I gather that India exports
quite a bit of furniture.

Any and all feedback is very much appreciated.

great question! I was in the same boat few months ago... so I can say something reclining sofas... I bought "pecos" brand in roomstore (loveseat+sofa) for about 2100 (not that I am recommending roomstore). I just saw the same set available for much cheapter at rooms to go. just search for "pecos" and you will find it. I can not vouch for how good it was, but it felt really good as long as I had.

You have to see if you want to use it as a sofa or as a recliner. You may think that you can use it as a sofa when it is not reclined. I had the same thinking when I bought it... but the recliner manufacturers don't seem to think that way... as a result, these types of sofas are normally made to be used for the reclining position and so don't do a good job for regular seating position (atleast I didn't feel comfortable in normal position and got back ache)... it was a great & comfortable recliner though... finally, I had to get rid of it (don't want to talk about that frustrating experience)

My suggestion would be to think about how you want to use it and whether it would fit your room as recliners are normally bit bigger than their counter parts. Another option is to buy regular set but with a reclining chair to satisfy both needs (they are available with matching color/leather type)

I don't know anything about their reliability, but if you purchase warranty (for additional 100-200) they will cover them for 3-5 years. Since the experience is so subjective, it would be a better idea to try several sofas in several stores before deciding. don't let the salesman come behind you... just take your own time and feel the sofas.

Why is it so expensive? just the markup... if you avoid but name stores and buy from outlet centers, agents, etc... you will save money..

We have one for last one year.

1. So far so good. After arrival had to call in the service technician to open and oil the mechanism to loosen it up.
2. N/A
3. At my friends place and at the shop it was fantastic experience! We loved it initially. Later the sofa started sagging and sitting became uncomfortable. When reclining the lower back portion sinks in, we had to buy a back cushion to offset that.
4. We bought from Levitz for 900$(was on sale), actually we loved LazBoy's recliners.

Bottomline: We normally dont sit, but recline and despite the sagging back its a great way to watch TV and rest after you come back from office.
I may soon have to throw the current one out and would love to buy a recliner which is firm to sit on and the lower back stays firm and offers lumbar support while reclining. Would look at Lazboy once again.

There are La-Z-boys available at Stanley Boutique showrooms in Bangalore, Chennai and other major cities. Just couple of weeks ago, I visited their showroom and a basic recliner (genuine leather) costs about Rs 35,000/-

There are very good recliners available at Rs 45,000/- onwards - comes with 10 year warranty for the recliner mechanism and 1 year warranty for the leather.

We bought a Recliner Set (Sofa + Love Seat + Recliner) from LazBoy in July 2006. The model was Gavin.

1. So far so good but it has been only 1.5 years. So can't say how it is going to hold up after a few years. They all come with a long-term warranty if it is of any help.
2. No idea.
3. Again, it has been only 1.5 years, but it has held up pretty well. We have not noticed any sagging at the back. The one we bought allows us to use in both reclining position or as a normal seating position (without reclining). And we really like that choice as we are not reclining maybe half of the time.
4. We never owned any other recliner set, so I don't know if these are any better. We talked to the sales guy at Ashley's (Dallas) before we ended up buying the LaZBoy recliner. His take was that things have improved sufficiently enough that one does not need to pay LaZBoy extra money for their brand.

In any case, we went to the different stores in Dallas like Ashley, Rooms To Go, Roomstore, LaZBoy and eventually decided on Gavin from LaZBoy.

Update from my side:

We bought Ashley leather reclining sofa and rocker reclining chair, but when it
was delivered, it was defective, (one side of reclining sofa not closing properly),
rocker chair also did not rock much. So we returned it. Also I could see leather
is not good for us, since very hard to maintain, any sharp object can cause
a tear or scratch, plus leather gets very cold (NE weather) and gets real hot when sun shines on it.

So then we ordered Lazyboy Cloth "Tulsa" reclining sofa and chair (swivel, rocker, recliner), only downside is that it will take 6 weeks to deliver.
So now in wait state, will update the thread with initial impressions when we get it.

BTW, I came across the following website for furniture in India in Delhi,

I send them enquiry and they promptly sent me price list of all items
on their website.

Read your post on leather recliner.We are in the same boat .We want to buy recliner sofa for India.Wanted to check with you if you tried recliners from Jordans Furniture and any reviews abt it.We liked couple of recliners from Jordans .All suggestions/opionns abt it.
Also how does leather recliner suit indian conditions?
