School district and working parents

Hi,

We live in "X" city in bay area and both of us work in "Y" city. "X" city doesn't have good schools. "Y" has top rated schools. Can we try for admission in Y schools for our kids.

Is residence in "Y" mandatory?
Is their a chance for my daughter to get admission in "Y" schools as both of us are working in "Y".

Any good ways to get admission in "Y" with out relocating.

You have to reside in the school district to get admission for your kids in the same school district. Work place has nothing to do in determining the residency. Challenger schools is another option without relocating.

Of course you can. I did this 10 years ago for my son when we both worked in a different city and live in a different city. Ask the school district where you work about inter-district transfer or intra-district transfer. You will have to do the paperwork every school year though.

Not that I am aware of. The school needs your electricity bill or tel bill as proof of your residential address. They don't care about your work address. In bay area the demand for good schools are so high that the list overflows. Was that the case for you? Did you get admission for your kid in a school where there were people waiting to get their kid into that school?

are you sure the schools allow that now? Cupertino,Saratoga, Fremont MSJ and West Palo Alto boast good school districts and house prices in these areas rival that of the neighboring cities. If that's just a matter of paperwork, people would work in these areas and will buy homes in less pricier areas. Can you give me some more data on which school district you did that?

I lived in Santa Clara school district and worked in Whisman school district (now it is Mtn.View school district). You can request the school district you want to put your child in writing and give reasons (like after school day care, both parents work nearby, etc). They can do the intra-district transfer based on the availability. Not sure if you can do that in Cupertino, etc as they are all crowded. If there is avialability, they will process the request. But preference is last for transfer students. In my case the Whisman disctrict didn't have the issue of over crowding.

This is the key.

Typically desis (and chinese) crowd at good schools and seats will not be available thro' transfer.

Isn't being resident of a good school district a premium ( albeit small ) we pay for a house (or rent ) ?
Many of my friends and myself did consider "a Good School District" as one of the criteria.
