music instrument - to take to India from US

Post by akila »

Hi,
I am thinking on buying a Violin and use it in US for couple months. I am planning on going back to India in another 5 months. Should I need to pay any customsduty for the used music instrument at Chennai airport at the port of entry? Can I take my Violin as a carry on luggage in flight instead of my laptop? Or Should I ship that instrument? In this case should I need to pay any customs duty ?
Thanks for your help.
Thanks

A few years ago, we checked-in a violin from US to Singapore. They give you a special crate for "delicate" items but give you no guarantee how the other side will handle it. Thankfully, it arrived in one piece.
