One of the greatest of Tamil writers...pay your respects
Writer Sujatha Dead....Respects
My condolences.
Great loss to Tamil literary, intellectual and entertainment world.
He is a multi faceted personality. Nowadays, he is known by his association to movie world but he has so many other contributions as well. Now, who will write the screenplay for Rajini's "Robot"?

Remarkable writer who pioneered science fiction in Tamil;
I still remember expectantly waiting for the next Vikatan to come to read 'Meendum Jeeno' or 'Yen Iniya Iyandhira'.
Besides that(since I grew up in Trichy, TN) his stories set in Srirangam were always evocative and close to my heart.
He wrote an excellent introduction(or primer) to the Brahmasutra with his brother.
His screenplay writing was wonderful also...
He will be missed sorely.

I am 38 ....
Remember the young days when reading sujatha novels was a passion, even in college Sujatha writings invoked discussions in par with hit movies. Ganesh/vasanth combo, pirivom santhipom that introduced tamil nadu to USA way of life, meendum jeno, kanavu thozhirchalai of movies....each one a class of its own..
And till date i have not read a classic semiautobiography of the class of "Srirangathu devathaikal", a collection of short stories where he is one of the characters, especially the chapter where he plays a cricket match. Read his other book "karuppu kuthirai" where he writes about betting in cricket.this was in 1980 that came true to every single word twenty years later
2000 years from now, the youngsters can truly touch and feel the 20th century lifestyle of tamilnadu..not in any of the movies, but in the countless shortstories depicting middle class life.
When I was a child, had several dreams..and only one dream seemed realistic, but never happened....I wanted to meet sujatha once!
Will reopen one of his books tonite!

I am an avid reader of Sujatha. Almost read all his novels several times. Some of his short stories are really great. Vairam, Priya, Kolaiuthir Kalam, etc are excellent novels. He introduced several new concepts in writing stories.
I have bumped into him on several occassions. He regularly goes for walk in Beach and lived in Mylapore area.
It is a great loss to Tamil arts.

I think, his best novels are vairangal, dr. narendranin vinodha vazhakku and sreerangathu devadaigal
He is on the league of tamil greats, Kannadasan and Bharathiyar.

I worked under him (he was much senior to me at that time) and had chatted with him at beer parties (He doesn't open up much in office settings).
I think Vairangal is very poignant. Nirvana Nakaram was very good. Srirangathu Devadaigal is very mischievous. I remember reading science fiction stories in Kalki every week in the 70s./80s He was the only writer who can write science fiction in tamil at that time. On novels he covers a wide range - science fiction, social inequalites/issues, detective stories. On non fiction I read one book long back where he introduces computer to the lay man in simple manner. Another one on future was very good as well. On movie scripts Roja and Indian (Hindustani) stand out.

Story : Kakitha Changili ( paper chain)
Vimala was looking at her dying husband. A priest walked into the ward in the dirty government hospital and asked Vimala. Can I pray to Jesus for your Husband..?
She said, Yes, Jesus or muruga, as long as my husband survives!
The priest prayed for few seconds and moved on to the next bed where a poor women with a baby was looking after her husband. "Can I pray for your husband"? ..she asks " are you praying to lord "Kathavarayan"?..No, I am going to pray with Jesus..
No Sir, If he wakes up, will shout at me for praying to Jesus..
