NRI Dentists R2I

Post by jbabu »

This thread is specifically for DENTISTS.

Is there any NRI Dentist who returned to India?

Is there any USA dentist Returning/Returned to India - especially Hyderabad?

I'd like to hear from you, on your R2I experience, including your practice in Hyderabad and work experiences.

I graduated from OU with BDS and from Boston University with a DMD. Practising in US for the past 3 years. Returning to Indian in 2009 Summer.

Your feedback is very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Jbabu, Mr.Long,

Just curious. What kind of opportunities exist for US returned dentists in India? Do you have any edge over local dentists? If I may how much money one could earn in good dental practice?

PB.

PS: I am not a dentist, just curious questions. That's all.

Patnababu -

I am not sure if there's a huge advantage for US returned dentists in India, especially in hyderabad. Local dentists double up as dental surgeons as well, doing most of the surgical extractions as well. But, general dentists in US do not do those surgical stuff (while in US). So, that's a disadvantage, if I may say that.

US-returned dentists generally have better chair-side behaviour and patient handling skills. Work done by US-returned dentists, I guess, will also be a lot better than many of the local dentists (mind you - I haven't done any surveys - just my perception).

Ofcourse, a US degree MIGHT attract new patients to the US-returned dentists, over a local dentist.

All in all - it will be a new experience for R2I dentists. Not sure what the compensation levels are though. I am looking for someone who R2I'ed before and who can share their experiences and useful info.

If this helps your decision...I would go to R2I dentist hoping that they will give same treatment/service as we get here in US. Especially with kids. Unless prices are sky rocketting as dentist insurance is not covered by most of the companies there.

#4 -- I am not a dentist but speak from the other side.

In general, few people go to a dentist in India. First time I went to a dentist when I was 25+. My employer sent everyone for mandatory medical checkup.

I attended 3 sessions with a dentist in St Johns, BLR to clean up the mess accumulated over the years. I have never seen any of my family or friends going to a dentist. The culture of regular cleaning and checkup does not exist. You go to a dentist when there is some problem.

Yes, most of the company paid insurance does not cover dental expense and people consider it as waste of time. This habit carried over when we moved to US. For the first 6 years I never went to a dentist though I paid for the dental insurance. Finally one friend convinced me and now we are regulars. May be things would have changed in India with so many r2i from US.

Deepika,

That is good feedback. We are going back to India in 2009 Summer, and there's no change in that. I am just trying to get a feel for what a returning dentist can expect.

Yes - offering a package deal for all R2I kids could be a good practice building step :)

Thanks.

Though there are quite a few dentists in Hyd, most of them are still operating their clinic like they did a decade ago. My opinion is is that if an R2Ied practitioner operates his/her clinic like an avg clinic operated in N. America, then that clinic will attract lot of crowds.

We R2Ied last year and when we started looking for a dentist for us and a pediatric dentist for our kids, we found that most of the dental clinics are owner operated, in many cases, just with one dentist and not so well maintained. Finally we were referred by one of our friend to Apollow Dental clinic. We were very happy with the dentists, equipment and maintenance of the clinic and as we expected required us to take appointments about a week in advance. For general checkup, cleaning and full spectrum x-ray costed me Rs.850

Hope this helps you in setting your expectations...
