Is it possible to R2I in a short notice?

Post by cando »

I have been thinking of R2I for a long time, but made no plans. We are going back for ourselves not for kids. Now I want to see if it is possible to return in 2 months.

  • Returning to Chennai
  • Kids will be in 8th and 3rd grade (No schools have been decided yet, not even applied) - My biggest worry
  • Have not started looking for a job in India, my current company does not have India development center
  • Wife and I are unanimous in R2I
  • Have a flat (fully paid) in South Chennai
  • Savings of $80K
  • Not living in own house in US
  • Some family support in Chennai

We know about the hardships in India with regards to daily life and we are sure we will overcome it eventually. Is R2I realistic in my case? My biggest worry is to find a school for my oldest, next big worry is to find a job.

I know I haven't given much information but with what I have given, what do you think my chances of R2I and what should I concentrate on most?

Thanks

You don't have a house here and you have a flat in Chennai fully paid, you have savings of $80K or ~36 lacs, you should be able to to R2I in less than 2 months, no worries. Go as soon as possible so that atleast your older son could get admission. All the best.

If you and your wife are unanimous on R2I then go for it..too much pondering and analyzing will not take you anywhere..Kids school admission should be your top priority and focus more on that..rest everything will fall in place. Good luck !

If you have a job here, would it be not better to move your family first and make sure they adjust before you move back. You can go on a vacation to settle them down.
If you are in your 40s, job search can be challenging unless you've a hot skillset. Of course, you'll surely find a job.

Can you offer more details into why you want to R2I? I do applaud your honesty when you say you are going for yourselves and not for kids.

My 2 cents:

If you could survive those initial years then the chances of a successful r2i is great. On the job front if you have good contacts, good job finding skills and flexibility of working with lower salaries (because of the short time that you have ? though starting with a lower salary is not a good idea) then you should be good. From what I know, you might need good contacts for getting school admission particularly for the older kid. Don?t you think that learning language subjects (Tamil/Hindi) could be a problem for that kid?

All the very best for your r2i. As others have pointed out (and you have also mentioned) -- getting admissions for kids might be a bit difficult. Regarding your job search, if you start looking now and you might be able to find an offer from here. Good luck.

Cando,

If you can secure admission for your kids in a good School then you got to go - not whether it's possible to go. The reason being both you and your wife are in agreement on returning and the longer you delay the more it will make it harder for your older kid to adjust.

I don't think finding a job in India should be difficult for you and it will be just a matter of few months at the most. I saw so many in good IT jobs in India who were struggling to convey simple things in English. I don't see a reason why you having worked in US for several years would have difficulty finding a decent job. Moreover, the biggest expense in India is house rent and you're covered there.

Good Luck :-)

Can you share more details on How many years have you been in US and your Immigration status? Not being nosy but just curious as this is very important for R21ers.
