Islamic terrorism: A factor in your R2I plans..

To OP: Yes it is a factor. Lets leave aside for a moment Islamic terrorism, thats bad enough but how about reservations for Muslims in educational institutes and govt jobs? It has already started in some states and once it starts, you know where its headed. Consider this entirely possible scenario....by the time your son gets to college, in addition to maybe 60% reservations for SC/ST and maybe 30% reservation for women, now there is 15% reservation for muslims, thanks to the politicians our people vote for. Now your son can't even get into the mediocre colleges. How do you like that?

Wow ! Somebody has reactivated this thread. Yes. Reservations are a bane and is a major vote catcher. One way i can see the problem kind of going away is more number of Engineering colleges have sprung up. That kind of reduces the problem. Way back in 90s when i did my Engineering in Karnataka reservation was 70%. There were hardly any seats available for general merit candidates. Approximately 8-10 seats in a class of 70. The stupid Veerappa Moily govt had increased it to 80% later. However this was stuck down by Supreme court and reservation reverted back to 50%. My hope is with more awareness and education we should see the menace of caste based reservation going down. We need to have Anna Hazare kind of agitations on this as well. I can understand if there are reservations based on economic criteria or any physical handicap but that is not the case. Most of the reservations are based on caste only.

Reservation must and should be abolished totally. There should not be reservation for nobody. Should stop this noncense.

I agree. Everytime, they reserve a seat for the handicapped on the bus, I am so miffed - why the hell should the handicapped be given preference and then they have thsi ladies compartment in trains in which I cannot get on, because it is reserved. I would love to step in that compartment, so I want reservations to be done away with.

I liked the way that you replied to the post.

However, I am sure that cmk786 is not referring to these type of reservations. He is talking of caste/religion based reservation.

I am completely against caste/religion based reservation myself.

There has been a big discussion on this forum on this topic. But personally, I still believe that a person's ability to do a work has nothing to do with his/her being born into a hindu-dalit, muslim, christian, hindu-brahmin, sikh, budhdhist family.

If one kid from each of these families is born as a healthy child and has had been exposed to same kind of social environment and has had the same opportunities in life (economic or otherwise), then why should these kids be treated differently when it comes to getting admission into an engineering college?

Thanks for that clarification. Some guy banged my head on the sidewalk the other day and knew it would have some effect at some point, it happened to be today.

I myself mis-understood his post. When he said

I thought he is talking of railway reservation system... I started thinking about the hassle my extended family will have during summer break travels in India.

Easy for you to say since you most likely had the means and support structure in place to do what you are doing without help externally (aka reservation).

PS - I did not need it either but worth thinking abt it.

I would like to hear from someone on this post who made use of reservation to achieve something. All else is noise.
