Wireless Broadband services in India

Post by Plan2010 »

I will be wfh after r2i, initailly I guess we would be in serviced apartments. In a previous post read about a wireless card which you plug into the laptop and vonage would also be connected to the laptop. Does it really work that way? Is this a prepaid card? Heard from someone else about Sprint wireless. Does anyone know about the reliability of these options?

I'm trying to figure out how long it would take to setup before I can start working. Any inputs are appreciated.

There is one new wireless internet service provider came in the market. Its Tikona Digital Network. My friend from Mumbai has given good review (Not about using vonage but for speed)

You can use Reliance wireless broadband+ It gives around 2Mbps speed in most major cities. Pre-paid card is easy to get and quite reliable, you might some office help to get address proof etc.

I am not sure about the Vonage though, if vonage requires ethernet, it might be difficult to share this connection with vonage. If it is USB based, it should work.

Get a Reliance Netconnect Plus or Tata Photon Plus data card with EVDO Support. Use a SIP Softphone (Vonage provides I think) on your laptop.

If you want to even unplug from the laptop and maybe use your PDA Phone that has WiFi.. You could use a MiFi/MyFi.. (yes MiFi) like Mobile Router with the above Data cards to have a personal mobile WiFi. (Install SIP Softphone on the Phone)

I just got a Tata Photon+ usb device and it is working very well. In fact, I find this much faster (almost the same speed as LAN ethernet connection) than Reliance Netconnect, however I am not sure whether there are devices/data cards/plans with different speeds.

crashburn,

Do you think Nettalk duo VOIP device will work with this Tata Photon wireless internet? I have been trying to connect a regular GE cordless phone via the Nettalk duo and a wired dsl connection without any success. I dont know whether its the dsl connection, the telephone or some combination. I know the Nettalk duo with the provided phone # works since it did work in the US.

TIA

BSNL 3G is much faster than Photon +. Silly me, I thought there were some issues with BSNL 3G, when it was actually my silly laptop that was causing problems.

Although its late to ask this Q on this thread - how are 3G speeds here (in Chennai) ? Are they anywhere comparable to broadband speeds - faster / slower ? I have not used 3G cards (thumb drive modems) on laptops as of today - so please pardon my ignorance.

What were the problems? My friend moved from reliance to bsnl3g and he does not seem to get the speeds and struggles with keeping an internet connection(It keeps dropping).

R2I'ed on July 30,2011.
Got myself a BSNL broadband connection.
I'd say these guys are good compared to anyother service.
Reason: I got my own wireless modem so didnt go with their device

Plan:
1350/month or 13500/year
speed: 4Mbps till 20GB
After 20GB it goes to 512Kbps

Very happy & satisfied customer
