Currently on India trip. Its mindboggling to see how much corruption is going on here. And I am not talking about a RTO babu asking for Rs. 200 bribe. I am talking about the corruption (rather theft) going on large scale by politicians. Its not only Rajas and Kalmadis, every MLA and small time minister is raking in crores. Just watch the TV and every 10 min you hear about hundreds of crores of scams happening every day. Even if half of them are true, its beyond huge. Just heard a news about 188 crore scam by MH Congress Chief. There are many stories like that going on right now. Everybody knows they are being looted but seem to have accepted as 'price to live or do the business'. Would there be a time when people will think enough is enough?

In talking with some in India, the biggest let down is Tata's link to the spectrum scandal. Especially coming on the heels of their claim that they are clean and they were once forced to bribe by someone, which they claim they didn't.

I dont believe that American media is not free and fair and it is in India. But lets assume that is the case for a hypothetical scenario. Lets say there are 100 scams in India and 100 in US in a particular year. Lets say Indian media uncovers 50 of them and Amrican media 10. Now you tell me how many in India will get prosecuted and punished and how many in US? That is my beef. People involved in these huge scams go unpunished in India. The maximum punishment they get is they have to give up their ministry or administrative post (only to come back little later).

Have to agree with you notwithstanding the small silver lining news like that of neera yadav, a homely looking former chief secretary with a rather dubious distinction of being voted more than once as the most corrupt bureaucrat of UP who colluded with multiple CMs across party lines who cozied up to her and looted the exchequer by hundreds of crores.
Finally it seems the proverbial long arm of the law has caught up with her, she being convicted and sentenced to 5 year imprisonment by a CBI court, and she spent one cold night in a jail with common thieves and ironically chose to read Nehru's discovery of india or something. Of course she has applied for bail in HC and should be a free bird in a short while. A small price to pay for hundreds of crores, who would not like to be in her shoes? :)

It all comes down to what you take the word "free" to mean. She might be free in the eyes of law enforcement. However, for the rest of her life, will she be free from guilt?

I would not be able to do so.. if I were in her shoes. So, no, I am not interested in wearing her shoes/chappals/sandals, whatever brand they are..

She will update her resume and state that she is now a freedom fighter and was even arrested and spent some time in the jail with common prisoners. The voting public may buy that. :)

A person who is corrupt has some moral deficiency. To them the roti will taste the same, if not better and they will continue to enjoy that sleep after.

All she has to do is look at people who are more corrupt compared to her. Compare herself to murderers and rapists she met in the jail, pat her back for doing a fine job, and enjoy the warm roti with extra butter. People in power seem to be convinced that they are invincible. If they surround themselves with supporters who are worse than them (morally), they start to feel good about themselves.

In general, there is a threshold to stick to moral values. Research has shown that people stick to morals when the payout is negligible. When they do not stick to morals, there is always a good justification. I am sure I will have a very good justification, if I ever bribe that RTO officer with Rs200 for a driver's license.

There as some folks trying to fight corruption. Join hands with them and publicize that to as many folks as you can.

if she felt the way you did - she would not have done all the stuff she did. Obviously she does not feel the guilt or the empathy to others suffering while she is hoarding money.

It is a tragedy that these folks seem to amass so much wealth, while watching all the poverty around them.

I don't know if this is true or not, but the story goes like this -
When Devaraj Urs was chief minister of Karnataka, people used to visit him asking for favors. His wife used to sit at the door, asking for tips before they could get inside. A poor farmer one day came by asking help to get a loan and she asked him for money, he said all he had was rs. 2.00 for bus fare to return to his village. She said she would gladly accept that.

That shows the civic, moral and philanthropic nature of our netas and political leaders!

I have heard that the likes of Devegowda and Kumarswamy collect upto rs. 1 crore per day in such dealings.

(Just read stats that 55% indicated that they bribed. Cops were the recipient in 27% odd cases.)
