"U" visa on an Expired passport for KIDS -- important info for OCI/USC

Post by MrLong »

I was recently subjected to this temporary entry for my kids due to not having the U sticker on hand (expired PP). It seems ridiculous that every time, a new PP is issued, we need to visit the Indian Embassy and get the U sticker affixed. Why not we just carry the old expired PP with the U sticker and a valid new PP?

So, Pushpa Kumar's (Vice Consul) second reply as mentioned in Post #1 is totally wrong as evident from posts #2 and 3.
If Vice Consuls are not aware of correct procedures, how can they expect normal people to follow rules. It is either total incompetency or pure bureaucracy.

It is interesting the photo specifications for OCI on Chicago consulate website is totally different from that mentioned in indian Govt website:

Chicago website : http://chicago.indianconsulate.com/4PassportPioOci/OCI/OCI_How_To_Apply.html

The above site says: Photograph should measure 3.5 cm X 3.5 cm without border .......

Indian govt website:http://passport.nic.in/oci/Photo-Spec-FINAL.pdf

This website says: The photograph should be in colour and of the size of 2 inch x 2 inch (51 mm x 51 mm).

It looks like both are valid, but that was not mentioned in any of their sites(as of today). But for a person who is applying for OCI and come across these two contradicting information, he has to contact consulate to get clarification. This is where the fun starts :)

In this case, he was not carrying old passport with U sticker. Probably if he had there would have not been any problem.

Chicago consulate "recommends" to have the stamp on the new passport but is not mandatory. I will be traveling with my son in few days who got a new PP but I am not applying for OCI again.

This is from San Francisco Consulate Website.

22. Will a new OCI visa sticker be issued on the new foreign passport after the expiry of the old passport?

Yes. On payment of requisite fee, a new visa will be issued. Please follow OCI Miscellaneous Services instructions. As the OCI Visa is lifelong, the holder can continue to carry the old passport in which the visa sticker was affixed and the with new passport for visiting India without seeking a new visa.

On the same website see FAQ #58

58. Whether OCI documents have to be re-issued each time a new passport is taken?

  • Up to the completion of 20 years of age, OCI documents have to be re-issued each time a new passport is issued to the holder as the physical appearance changes.

  • Between 21-50 years of age, there is no need to seek re-issuance of OCI documents each time a new passport is issued. You can travel with new passport, Old passport (where OCI visa sticker is affixed) and OCI card. It is always better to be on the safer side and get the new OCI card as we often forget to carry our old passport while travelling. This is suggested as OCI card holder will have mental peace.

  • After the completion of 50 years of age, OCI documents have to be re-issued once after issuance of a new passport and whenever physical appearance changes.
