Monthly living expenses for a R2I family

Thanks for such an enlightening spreadsheet. 2 questions i had was on internet and cell phones. What service do you use for internet? Also on cell phone does it make sense to buy a cell from USA before R2I and what type of service is available?

Gacchu - Thanks for providing your personnel and actual expense spread sheet. This helps a lot for people who are planing R2Ing in near future and wondering what could bre cost of living in India. Just like some one else said earlier on this thread you really desreves a standing ovation for your efforts.

i hv not gone through the spreed sheet but with rent and other expenses i spent RS 50,000 in india last month... yes with a kid but no husband....i am sure with the mortage and husband it will go up to min 1lakh depending on my mortgage/husband...yes it is really that expensive.

Yes, 75K to 100K is about right if you are living a fairly "good" lifestyle as just 2 maids, a cook (all part time) and a driver can cost you between 12-15K. You can get maids/cooks/drivers for low pay, but in my opinion, you end up getting what you pay for.

Groceries, if you buy stuff like cheeses/pasta/sauces and lots of fresh fruits can cost you 8-10K a month...

With no rent and car payment.....50k should be sufficient. We spend only 1500 for a part time maid and no driver(self).

Fuel cost and eating outside sucks up the major part. Out of 50k, 10k is our school fees.

Fresh fruits ----3k pm

There are many other threads in this forum that can guide about the salary. My buddy from IT says ~1.5x of your experience should get you in the ballpark. 7.5L might be little tight if you have kids etc.

Here are the excel spreasheet for the year 2009/2010 expenses.

The year 2010 expense sheet will contain more items than the 2009 one. So the budgeted numbers will be different than the one in 2009.
Indian inflation is sky rocketing.
Cutting the onion into slices does not bring tears any more, but looking at the price of onion/kg does.

For all the potential R2Iers, bring a potload of money with you and don't underestimate the power of indian inflation.
Otherwise R2I can quickly turn into a "Phyrric Victory".
