Kumon Vs. Sylvan Learning Center for Math

Post by vsri »

My son went to Kumon. I was not in favor of it. My wife wanted him to put him there. (Just she wanted to show off to her friends with "My son goes to Kumon" proudness.).

In one line I can say. If you are disciplined enough to make your kid work 30 minute every day then you do not need Kumon.
Buy worksheets from Barnes and Nobel or print from internet and make them work.

They do not teach. They just give standard set of worksheet and make them work and make parents to grade it to.
Since we pay kumon we are force our kid to sit and work.

Practice makes perfect.

If you can make your kid work 30min every day with some worksheet then there is no need to send them to Kumon.

Sending to Kumon at early is waste of money. It is not a rocket science we can teach the same. Only problem is we
are not disciplined to put them to work every day.

Sending to basic math upto 5th grade and reading is waste of money.

Kumon Vs. Sylvan Learning Center for Math

I have been using edhelper sheets for my kids and they are really good. Lately I started using beestar.org and I like it very much. They offer 2 free math test every week. They have lot of paid courses too. Overall I liked it very much. Since my child's school don't do much GATE related activities, I signed up for Bee star GATE math courses and they are really good. It just takes 10-15 min. for them to take this test and is a good booster for them.

I don?t know Sylvan Learning Center. But my child attended Kumon for a while. We liked it at the beginning. It helped her in math calculation skills. But over time, the benefit is no longer that visible and we feel more pressure on its monthly bills. Then DD's teacher sent us to beestar for free online math programs, and we have been using it. All real life world problems, challenging stuff to help kids thinking. DD loves it a lot. Plus, I also don?t have to drive her to kumon, saving my time and $$..
