How to protect the roof from hot sun in india. Any idea ?

Hello,
I am having a problem in my house in India. I have a top floor apt and it is our own house. So I have no difficulty to make any change in our roof. The problem is that the roof is so hot during summer that it is very difficult to use the top floor for a major part of the year even with AC. I am looking for any suggestion to shade the rooftop. It should look good . Rooftop garden is not an option. Not much man power available to maintain it. Any idea please ?
