What a song. One of my all time favorites.

PeterGriffin;249538Music has no age, my friend!

Speaking of lyrics, what about "Manithan enbavan deivam agalaam"...i'm still awed by how simple and yet powerful those lyrics are...

vsudhu;249554One of the main things that come to mind, when i think about tamil lyrics is Kannadasan. Here is an interesting episode. The producers of 'Avanthan Manithan' had scheduled overseas shooting in the month of May'1973 and were pressurising Kannadasan at every meeting to pen the lyrics quickly knowing his take-it-easy policy. One day when they wanted him to give the song on the spot, he wrote "Anbu Nadamaadum Kalaikudamae" in a jiffy and left the scene. MSV was the first one to see the poet's anger in the ending "may's" in each line.

film : avanthAn manithan
singer : TMS, PS
music : MSV
lyric : kannadasan

anbu nadamAdum kalai koodamae

Oh! interesting thread. Today only I came across this.

Yes, this incident about the song ending with " may" was read by me few years ago in a chain e mail. I think there are many incidences in Kannadasan life while he was penning the songs

farfromhome;254709My favorite is

Ninaipathellam Nadanthuvittal from Nenjil Ore Alayam.

Great Lyrics, Kannadasan at his best.

Btw, there's a program on Kalaignar TV called Vaanambadi (hosted by SPB) where PiraiChudan explains the intricacies and the meanings of the songs written in those days. I thoroughly enjoy his explanations.

Yes, that program on Kalaignar TV is a good one and I do not miss it

indigoyogi;249561I'm a PBS fan too. I used to especially like 'Manithan enbavan' and 'mayakkama kalakkama'.Mayakkama kalakkama was especially a very comforting song. His voice has an ethereal quality to it.

In the " mayakkamaa kalakkamaa" song, the following sentence,

"unakkum kiizhee ullavar koodi
ninaiththup paarththu nimmathi naadu"

is the most touching and applicable even now. If we can follow this, most of the present day problems would be disappearing

excellent allegory from the same song ( the wife goes to work and the husband feels like he is losing his importance) :

Neeyum naanum sernthu irunthom nilavum vanum pola, naan nilavu pola theindhu vandhen nee valarndhathale..

Infact the entire movie is summed up in these two lines.

What a coincidence?

I just had the chance to listen to the song 'Kuzhandaiyum theivamum kunathal ondru' yesterday. It was the first time that I paid such close attention to the meaning of the song. Unbelievable!! That's the only way I can describe the substance of the song.

Hats off to genius Kannadhasan for penning such a marvellous song!

All the trivial and petty things we (humans) fight over, argue, worry, anger etc.. this song would open your inner eyes for being silly to be perturbed by all this meaningless stuff.

Just went on google and found the following link for you guys to listen, if you are interested. It's the 2nd song in the list. Enjoy....

My favorite singers are A.M.Raja & Jikki ( Husband & wife combination ) His voice suited very well to Kathal Mannan Gemini Ganesh and Jikki for Savithri. All songs sung by A.M.Raja for Gemini Ganesh were hits. Example Thennillavu (Paattupadava Paathupesava, Kaalaiyum neete, maalayum neeye etc.
