My Roots;253469It is custom in south India too but just a flower or sweet box is enough but when people take that as a status symbol and start bringing expensive ones, then it is like obligation to give them back. Just my openion:)

And people bring "junk items" just for the sake of bringing something as gift and to get rid of the junk stuff that somebody had given them. And then it goes on a rotation. We give that junk to somebody else and so on...

Have you had this before:

- People raise their arms in air keep them behind their head and started talking to you. It just gets me. Sends me a signal, I don't give a damn what you say, just listen to me....

- People scratch all over the body parts while talking to you. This actually happened on a recent trip to India. Went to a relatives place to invite their family for my family function, and the guy sat across me, while talking, scratched arms, legs, tummy....goddang every part. I had to look away to ignore him....

So, you know what to get him the next time you meet him! "Gold bond medicated anti-itch cream!"

Here are the few things that annoy me :

1. People talking in the 'Fake' american accent, and using incorrect grammer all at the same time, or even using incorrect references phrases of american english. A true story in my office my collegue, who had been in US not for over 2 years, was trying on his best fake accent and saying to my boss "let me give you an eyebird's view", instead of a bird's eye view, my boss (an american) actually got confused and asked, "which bird's view"?. ROFL. :21:

2. When 2 or 3 people who speak the same language have someone among them who doesn't speak their language and they continue to have the conversation in their regional language, making it very awkward and difficult for the person left out to follow the conversation. I've noticed this trait consistently among all different regional folks, north-indians, south indians, gujratis, bengalis, marathis, punjabi's, everyone. Why is so difficult to be a little considerate of others ? :emcrook:

3. When people who go as guests to other's homes, do not stop their kiddos from freely exploring and in the process messing up the host's house. Even after being pointed out by the host, the child gets just a slight 'pretend' scolding and the parent happily resumes the conversation with the hosts and other guests, completely ignoring the child's actions. Arghh. I haven't seen it with americans, but have frequently seen it with desis, dunno if americans also do it, i just haven't seen any.

4. Desis or NRI's, who are the wannabe types, and wanna show how cool and modern they are, by dissing Indian food and Indian movies in particular, and praising other cuisines or hollywood movies to the high heavens. I am not saying that it's wrong to praise other stuff, but the people who do this by putting down corresponding Indian things annoy me. For eg, once a couple friends's of ours said... "oh, you know, we just can't digest Indian food anymore, all those spices and oil, are too much for the tummy, will prefer greek or chinese instead, so much lighter and non spicy ". This was said by a couple who had landed here from India just 2 months ago!!!

Very interesting annoying thread...;)
In India most annoying habbit that really annoyed me was: cutting the line no matter where...
More:

1. Asking the price immedietly after seeing the new purchase in the house and then compare with what they have seen similar in other's house/store- ok when you know the price already then why asking?

2. Especially found in north Indian ladies ( i am from Delhi but loved staying in Hyd), to hike the price 10 times of their items (without asking) and telling without asking from which designer store or "abroad" they have bought.

3. In desi parties, men/women putting (hide under the chair/behind the table) away their juice/water glasses in the trash in somebody's house and the liquids are flowing in the host house. (increasing more work load for host instead of thanking them)

4. New parents: always talk, talk & talk abt their baby/kid's karname without realising if the person is interested anymore ... yeah we know its exciting..thoda bahut chalta hai but whole evening? everytime?? they don't even realize that we all (parents) have gone thru this process and most of the time all kids behave same....

So true!! not only food, everything that is Indian...movies,clothes, songs... etc...

and on the other side: when u r in India; most of yr friends/relatives start telling you (why ????we already know) without any reason all the evils/negatives abt US...(if they get chance to come to US they will be first in line):p

Some reason annoying habits I ran into lately in my current trip to India (for the lurkers: Yeah, I never saw a single bad habit in da US!)

1. I learnt the real meaning of the term "breathe down one's neck" in the cinema theater ticket queue. Didnt know that lungs are so powerful. Its not a nice experience to have a male unload a full load straight down the nape of your neck. How about some space, Sir?
2. Spit, spit, spit, spit, spit, spit, spit, spit - did someone invent the AK-47 spitfire machine? Or is it a way of dealing with the dust?
3. "Noise with the Nose" - I get down from the train, and everyone's making very strong funny noises with their noses trying to get two drops of some silly liquid out.
4. My favorite - I go to an authorized store to encash some dollars. The clerk then gets up to announce the conversation rate. Fine. I just dont get why he needs to run his fingers thru his zipper before he has to say that? I am not a pretty chic in a half saree.
5. Yeah, you can see this one coming next - the frequent need to grab a particular body part while talking nonchalantly. Its a good thing that women dont do it - that would be a major turn off.
6. A/C means its A/C when you come in, and A/C when you go out..and only during those times.

The Good things:
1. Thankfully, no one really's bothered with asking the salary details. Good.
2. Its nice to go to a nice cinema theater complex or a mall and see the younger generation being so casual with each other. Holding hands in public, and holding each other (relatively) is becoming so common now. More importantly, being very comfortable with each other.

Add this to your list too:
I've often seen people, even in the US, adjust their underwear as they walk. It doesn't annoy me but its just plain funny as some try to get a wedgie out between their bums, by stretching their legs while walking!

Folks who bring along electric rice cooker while on vacation, and make puliogare in Best Western.

The saying "you can't take it with you" is not true.

Why does it annoy you, unless you are in the same room :)
