Why not have 3 laptop batteries, have them charged when there is power and replace them when needed?

Good point; but 1) A couple of different laptops, so I would need to have different brands of batteries 2) Hassle of shutting down laptop to change battery, and 3) Laptop batteries not that cheap.

Rhino;266384We have regular 5hr power cuts in BLR. Unfortunately we got a square wave inverter, and it seems there is aa rsk of it damaging the laptop PSU/battery etc. The laptops battery only runs for 2 hrs. Anyone have a DC-DC power backup for laptops ? I'm thinking of getting some seperae backup for the laptop.

How about a UPS connected to a high capacity invertor. I have that arrangement in the house. Fortunately, we do not have such long outages.

Pure sinewave inveters are also expensive . http://www.amazon.com/XS400-400w-Sine-Wave-Inverter/dp/B000A7MW5E

Laptop input voltages (DC Input) are not standard, hence DC-DC power is not popular. Ex: Thinkpad X41 needs 16V, X60 needs 20V, HPs need 18.5 and 19 Volts depending on the model.

Rhino;269425Yes, but some DC-DC power supplies can be adjusted to output at the desired voltage.

I was wondering if there was some not too expensive soln for my predicament. Doesnt seem like it :(

Have you considered buying online UPS (APC or local model) that has just 5 minutes power backup? Usually these cost between 2 and 5 thousand Rupees, provide very good sine wave for your computer/modem/laptop and also help when inverter/main UPS takes a second more to switch to batteries. That is my solution for your problem described.

I have same idea dbs, but yet to make that arrangement. Could you share the brand and specification details on the UPS and invertor?

I do not have a UPS as a laptop does not need one. I have two invertor (1.5kw each) with four full size batteries (120AH each). It is a local make and not a branded one. Batteries are Exide, however. One invertor supports lights, fans, TV. The other was meant for the fridge (wife insisted) but does support a few others like lights/fan in the kitchen, water purifier, etc.

A 5 minute UPS probably costs one or two thousand only, but have not felt the need for it. I do have a desktop but can put up with it going off and then having to restart. It has taught my wife the idea of saving frequently. I also have set up the word to save her document every 5 minutes.
