In need of a printer asap, work from home and it will be very convenient.

-- Looking for a compact printer
-- wireless enabled - have a big desk but do not want to add printer to it
-- printer use will be limited , once or twice in a week, so can afford to have it set aside
-- currently have a lexmark 3 in one and am frustrated by it, sometimes my usb doesnt recognize it, it prints totally out of whack
-- should have good pages to ink ration (quantity vise, i will mostly print b/w)
-- best if avl at bj's or staples so that i can pick it up instantly, however ok if i need to order online
-- looking for around $120 or so

Some tips are

(1) Never use color printer to print B/W pages. Use laser printer for B/W and inkjet printer for color prints. Inkjet printer is a big rip off. In the long run you will save more if you have 2 printers, one for B/W and one for color.

(2) I find Canon printers to be of reasonably good quality and price. I have one wired Canon laser printer (not sure about the number but bought in frys for $80). The cartridge runs for over an yr. I also have a Canon inkjet printer.

You can go with a b/w laser printer like Brother HL-2170W. It's wireless enabled or you can connect it to your wireless router too. It's on sale at Staples for 110 bucks this week. The toner refill is available online for 20 bucks on amazon.com and for less in other places. You can print some few thousands sheets with this.. The other option is Samsung ML-2525W. If you look around, you can get it for 100 bucks on sale.

If you are ok with a wired laser printer, go with Samsung ML-2150. I've usually bought it for 50 bucks in staples and similar places. There's a brother equivalent called HL-2140 available for 50-60 bucks usually.

These are B/W laser printers and work fine for moderate load of 10-20 pages at a time or so...

As a general rule of thumb, the wired mono laser printers cost around 50 bucks and the wireless option is around 100 bucks..

Like layman mentioned, color printers are just for color printing for school projects or business.

Concur w/ Desipardesi. I have had Samsung and Brother. Works like a charm. Wireless, few thousand sheets. You can also go a 3 in 1, which will have fax, copier and printer. If you look around, 3 in 1 can be purchased for around 150 USD

Sometimes quality matters (just saying). I have had quite a few of those chotta printers from various brands(including HP) that seems to fizzle out. Then I got the HP 7310xi (color printer with fax, scan and copy). Took anything I threw at it for 5 years and running. Been really reliable, and pretty quick. Its been a real workhorse for me. I have used it for BW printing (since it has a separate BW cartridge). Yes, those cartridges are expensive. My next purchase would be a color laser printer - Samsung has some real attractive prices on them.

Layman - when you say 'use laser printer for bw printing', are you referring to monochrome laser printers only?

Thanks everyone for their responses. I ordered the Brother laser printer 2170 recommended by desipardesi from office max. It was for 150 everywhere else, so ordered it online.

Any opinions about the HP Photosmart C410a printer?
It sometimes goes on sale for $150. Printer's use will be mostly for school projects, photos and some b/w pages now and then.

If you are looking for all in one I highly recommend http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Wireless-Office-Printer-4206B002/dp/B0032AN4M6/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1299533629&sr=1-2 Canon MP 870 . Wireless All in one and best of all, it can use generic inks that you buy from meritline.

Please suggest a printer to buy in India. I need a multi-function printer which scans and prints photographs as well. Thanks.
