Hey all!
How safe is ANY urban centre in India for girls / women? Delhi / Mumbai / Kolkata / Bengaluru??? Not really... Even when leading a "sheltered" life, women have to go out for shopping, cant always be escorted by family, and cant trust drivers... even if a driver were affordable... So, what is a girl to do??? Grin and bear it?
Does anyone know the status of self defence non lethal weapons in India? I know for a fact that stun gun / taser / baton / mace / pepper spray / fixed blade knife (even the kitchen variety) are all ILLEGAL in the UK. I also know that some states in the USofA require you to first have a permit for these... And I tried to find about the status in India, came up with nothing.
My family is seriously considering a R2I, and I am concerned about this issue... Maybe it is the Aries male in me... Please share your knowledge... I tried to put this question in an unrelated thread, no one answered... Therefore this new thread.
Cheers

gitana;315430Hey all!Are you from India or just of Indian origin? Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkatta, Chennai are not run by Taliban. There are millions of women who go to work and shop and movies and colleges everyday.

gitana;315430Hey all!Yes you can trust drivers as many more females do. What sheltered life? Girls freely go around in public transit, private vehicles etc etc. As with any other country you never know about any stranger. You will always have to be careful.

I am not sure about other forms of weapon. I think pepper sprays/blade knives are not regulated but I could be wrong.

Have you even been to India lately. Gilrs dont grin and bear anything. I hope you are not confusing saudi arabia or afghanistan, and no they do not lead a sheltered life. And I dont escort my family to any shopping.

I can only speak of Mumbai. I had never carried any gun/taser/baton/mace/pepper spray/knife anywhere in Mumbai....only carried my commonsense and awareness.
I venture out on my own for shopping/work and find no trouble coming home even late in the night without an escort and if an occasion arise, I would not flinch on giving a tight kick between the offenders leg or shout bachao (save) to gather a crowd around me. But as I said my commonsense and awareness about a locality has shielded me in my three decades of existience in Mumbai.

Count your blessings that nothing happened when you tried to find out status of all this in India. :) Simply gazing too long at a high rise can get people into trouble now-a-days!
