Studying medicine in Pune

Post by neesha »

It is very long time since I have any information about medical college admissions in Pune. Can someone please give me the following info -

1) AFAIK there are 3 Medical Colleges in Pune - AFMC, BJ Medical and Bharati Vidyapeeth's Medical college. Are there any more colleges recognized by the Medical council in India ?

2) What is the admission process ? In the good old days it was only 12th marks with a cut off percentage every year. This is now changed and there is an entrance exam ?

3) Is the entrance exam only for 15% of the seats or the full quota ?

4) What are the fees (approx) both for merit and non merit students ?

1) For NRIs, only bharati vidyapeeth is for foreign applicants because the other two are government collegs. one more you might want to look into is DY patil medical college
2)the admissino process is simple, just contact the foreign departments in each college-DY patil and bharati vidyapeeth and they will guide you.
3)since you are an NRI, if you take the Entrance exam then i doubt you can compare with the Indian students (no offence just saying they have been preparing for this for a long time).
4)since you really cant take the Entrance exam theres no way you can be a merit student. for bharati vidyapeeth the fees are 25000 per year for all four and a half. I dont kno about the internship tho.

my suggestion is look outside Pune too. Also it depends on if you are going to move back to abroad after you finish undergrad. If you are from United States and you want to move back to the states after you complete medical studies then look into the KMC-AUA tie up program. That lets u do ur rotations in NY which makes a attaining residency alot easier and its cheaper cause its a carribean school with a branch in Manipal.

If you plan to practice in India like me then yea ur best option is India.

expfun123, Thanks a lot . May be I should give you more details.

This question was for a 16 year old who is UK citizen and OCI, planning to do 11th and 12th in India and then study medicine. I suppose she can prepare for the entrance as time doesn't seem to be a constraint.

1) Incase she cannot pass the entrance what other options are available ? i.e private colleges or management/OCI quota in government colleges ? What are the approx fees in private colleges / private quota in government college ?

2) She is an OCI and she will be doing her HSC in Pune will it still be a problem with the government colleges ?

3) She may come back to the UK after the first degree. I heard that after Indian MBBS degree doctors have to do one more year of study/internship/exams in UK ?

4) Doing internship in India(Maharashtra) should not be a problem as her cousins have their own hospital and then will be more than happy to have her.

Is she coming back to India only to do medicine? I think its easier to get into medicine in the UK. Esp if she plans to return to the UK after MBBS. The UK is deperately trying to protect its postgraduate medical training for only homegrown graduates as far as possible. So she might be at a disadvantage.

The medical college itself has some affiliated hospitals where the intern practices, I dont think the student can decide.

Since I am only going to start studying medicine in India this year itself, my information about High school questions may be wrong so double check me to make sure. If she doesnt do good enough to make the merit list in any of the medical colleges then im sure you can go thru management quotas OR if you still have relatives abroad, they can finance her thru the NRI sponsered quota. Management quotas will be much cheaper than any NRI quota tho because its directed at native Indian students who have done HS in India. Government colleges will be 100x cheaper anyday cause they are heavily subsidized but getting into a Government college is also 100x harder, you have to be the cream of the crop because the government colleges have better teaching but thats changing in India also, private colleges are gaining ground but for now government colleges are a better option if she can make it. Fees in an NRI quota nowadays run around 40-50 lakh(thats the average, theres a few higher and a few lower) but on the whole theyre pretty damn expensive. Getting into the management or thru merit is a much better option if she can pull it off

2) She is an OCI and she will be doing her HSC in Pune will it still be a problem with the government colleges ?
It shouldnt be while aplying if shes done her 11th and 12th in India. I think it also depends on her parents. I kno some colleges that also consider students NRI if their parents are abroad so i think ur best bet is to contact the colleges themselves and ask them about what status she would be connsidered.

3) She may come back to the UK after the first degree. I heard that after Indian MBBS degree doctors have to do one more year of study/internship/exams in UK ?

I dont kno about UK. see my advice is IF she wants to practice in UK, then her best bet is studying in UK too. Like in USA students come to India to study med so they can skip undergrad there so in essence they are saving time. But still, if you can make it in the counry you want to practice then you should study there. As I wanted to practice in India, i am going to India to do my medical college. I kno the UK and India both hand out MBBS but in India there is still the one year internship after, do they have that in the UK? If they dont then wont she be losing a year if she comes to India?

As for Post Graduate training, sumachechi is probably right. In the USA FMGs(foreign medical graduates) are looked down upon and given the lower residencies such as primary care. You would have to get good letters of reccomendations and stellar USMLE scores to get a residency above a native medical student. Im pretty sure the same goes for UK so if she wants to practice in UK then she should do her education there as well.

Again I just wanna say that alota mmy information could be wrong, IM just trying to give you an idea of what getting medical education in India is like and what she would have to go thru if she wanted to move back to UK. Ur best bet is to contact a college there and ask these questions or get a relative in Pune to find these things out from local colleges or schools as in India everything is only considered serious in person. Hope I Helped =).

Thanks ef123.

Feel free to ignore if this is too personal. I will be very grateful if you provide this information.
1) Did you take your admission in the OCI/PIO / Management quota ?
2) Which medical college ?
3) What are the fees ?

OCI means nothing really. You are still a foreigner in India. You don't need to register anymore with the local police.. That's it...

For college admission, you can only apply in NRI quota and pay fees accordingly.

desipardesi,

I can understand how OCI is not a full citizenship but I always understood that OCI gives parity of education with local residents/NRIs.
Also, when people r2i do they have to pay more fee in schools/higher secondary schools or does it all start at university level ?

OCI just lets u stay in India without hassle of visa and all once u get another countries citizen ship. I am also an OCI. I mean as far as beieng a citizen you cant own farm land or vote are some restrictions. IM not too clear on it but its useful cause you dont have to register and you can stay as long as you want without any hassles.

Yes, I gotin through NRI quota. The management qutoa is for native Indian students and the normal quota is thru the exam so no way i could get into both of those.
Uhmm if she is going to move back to India then she can get admission thru NRI qutoa IF her parens are still abraod or otherwise she will have to go thru management quota or merit into Medical College. I mean if she is confident in gonig to India then if she cant get in thru Merit then she can get in thru Management quota.

If she is eventuallly going to go to India for medical college then her best bet is to do her HS there. One, she will be more prepared for medical college there, she will have adjusted and she will pay less.
